When i was with a business trip to Iran my boss was in a meeting and there was also an Ayatollah named "Ayazi" or something like that. I know Iran is ruled by a person named Ayatollah but was not aware there are many Ayatollah?

So what is their office or duty? Is there a similar office in my religion so i can understand better?

I believed Ayatollah is a bit like our Pope but since there are multiple ayatollah that cant be true?

Ayatollah is a title next to Hojat al Eslam and some others base upon the level of knowledge of a person regarding Islamic teaching which include different fields from sciences like knowing Arabic language, linguistics, narrations, Quran , lexicology and history to sciences base on reasoning like philosophy, logic, mysticism ... it could take a person 60 to 70 years to master all the knowledge that he needs to know to be a Marja/Mujtahid (source of imitation) which then could interpret Quran base on what he's studied ... many can not study this long.

As far as I know titles base on years of studying are these :
Talabe (student)
Hojat al Eslam val Moslemin
Ayatollah
Grand Ayatollah
Mujtahid

And next to the science they must work on their spirituality ..
And Iran supreme leader's name isn't "Ayatollah" it's his title , his name is "Ali" ...
And like Vatikan there are cities that those who are interested in such a sciences (Islamic) would go and study like Qom in Iran and Najaf in Iraq.
What they wear is an imitation of what believed prophet of Islam were wearing.

When their courses are over they would be entitled as Hojat al Eslam and would be given cloths:

And again they need to study more:

even they have entrance exams:

Women could get to the rank of Mujtahid too.

The word "Ayah" in Arabic means a sign. Individual Quranic verses are also called ayahs since Muslims belief every Quranic verse is a sign of Allah.

The word Ayatollah is the Arabic combination of the words Ayah and Allah.

You missed ثقت الاسلام and حجت الاسلام after them it is حجت الاسلام و المسلمین .
And no you won't get any title when you are allowed to wear the clothes. You will be allowed to wear it after finishing خارج فقه .
And don't ask me what is it as I don't know.

That is SO helpful for those of us who do not have any knowledge of Arabic script.
Many thanks.
