If not checking out the thread title, I would think you are talking about US.

"This is about 1.9% of China's GDP. Using market exchange rates, China's annual converts to about US$228 billion. By comparison, the US military budget is US$649 billion – or 3.2% of US GDP. Oct 1, 2019"

Regarding Russia, I would actually say the main mistake Putin did was to take Crimea, when he took Crimea he ensured that Russia lost Ukraine for as long as the earth exists.

Therefore what Putin should have done was either:-

1-not take Crimea so that in the future at least there would be a chance for Ukraine to become an ally or at least a friend of Russia.

2-If he absolutely had to take Crimea then he should have invaded and took the entire Ukraine and not just Crimea, Russia was sanctioned after it took Crimea, so if they would get sanctioned anyway why not go all the way and take the entire Ukraine! Even if the west would go as far as stop oil imports from Russia similar to what happened to Iran's oil, the benefits would still outweigh the negatives, with Ukraine, Russia's population would increase to around 190 million, once Putin takes out the corrupt politicians In Ukraine the GDP per capita in Ukraine will be brought up to that of Russians, so while in short their would be economic pain , in the long term this would significantly boost the Russian economy.
Not only that but having Ukraine would have had massive security benefits for Russia since they would get much closer to western Europe.

If they took all of Ukraine, they would've had to deal with a huge Chechnya like conflict where they would constantly be attacked by an insurgency fueled by the West.

He should've at least taken the Eastern provinces of Ukraine though, like Donetsk.

It was a political hit job ... Putin needed to take Crimea to help ensure his political legacy. After Euromaidan, it was clear Ukraine would not be a Russian ally or friend so it was pretty clear from then on that the Crimea must be taken.

Invading Ukraine is not realistic at all. A full scale invasion would probably bring war with NATO and in that case there is no guarantee of Russian success at all. Tens of thousands of dead soldiers and total economic sanctions not to mention a massive guerrilla war all for controlling a foreign territory would not be worth it at all. It would be a Soviet Afghanistan times 100.

I don't think once Ukraine was taken by the West it will return to Russia orbit.

Do you think the West is not defending their territory?

The West, especially USA will try to do everything to eliminate any political leaders and parties who sympathized with Russia.

As well as public opinion to hate Russia even more thru mainstream media.
