Pakistani batsman Mohammad Huraira won the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his 76-ball 64 knock. He was dismissed by Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmed in an unusual way, which created a controversy. Bowler stopped at the last moment and whipped off the bails as the Pakistani batsman Huraira was out of the crease. The dismissal was seen as against the ‘spirit of the game,’ and fans expressed their anger on social media. Opinion remains divided on whether this particular form of dismissal is ok

As per MCC laws, “If the non-striker is out of his/her ground from the moment the ball comes into play to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the bowler is permitted to attempt to run him/her out.”

Afghanistan captain Farhan Zakhil, however, felt after the match that the act was not "in the spirit of the game".

"At that time, we realised let's do something different to build pressure on Pakistan," Zakhil told ESPNcricinfo. "To be honest, it was not in the spirit of the game.

"But we wanted to win. It was a very important game for us. The people of Afghanistan wanted us to beat Pakistan. But it's within the rules - and out is out. You have to stay within the crease. If you want to reduce the pitch length to 16 or 18 yards, then you're creating a problem for us.

"If you want to make runs and rotate the strike, you must respect the opposition, which is why we went ahead. If we were winning, we probably wouldn't have done it."

Huraira accepted that he shouldn't have left his crease, though he wasn't happy with the dismissal. "It was my first game in the World Cup, so a bit of a bitter experience," Huraira said. "But I should've been in the crease, and I'll learn from the mistake. I'll ensure it isn't repeated again."

I think it is fair for the rule to be in game. Indian spinner has correct argument ie. If a bowler can be penalized a wicket and/or runs if his foot is 1 mm over the line then why does the batsman get benefit? Cricket is already becoming a batsman game no need to damage the balance more.

.
the batsman gets the advantage of being ahead of the line, should be penalised.

regards

Ashwin himself run out butler in this fashion in IPL which created controversies ..Afghan Captain admitted that it was desperate attempt to win so probably planned trap for batsman ..i personally think that batsman should get few warnings ..its not that moving few inches forward would make any difference

It's okay. Batsmen should never leave the creese when the bowler is still holding the ball. Batsmen should be better trained to deal with such situations. It's like hit wicket.

he said that the people of of afghanistan want us to beat pakistan.
Captain Sahib and his kabuli clan can try stepping across the Durand line and see what happens.

Ungrateful pricks.

Off-topic. Mods take note.

No it's not off topic. It lends insight into why your buddies will deploy Mankad against Pakistan, hence is crucial to the discussion. If cricketers are willing to disregard the spirit of cricket in selected scenarios for POLITICAL REASONS, (which your own lovely nation state routinely does), it is completely worthy of discussion.

Politics and sport should not mix. India needs to grow up and learn this. Afghanistan likewise.

The law is correct. It's a run out.

Imagine it's a last ball and the batting team requires one run to win the match, and the batsman (non striker) runs half way already to reach to the batting end before even the bowler has released the ball, it will be extreme injustice to the bowler.

If we remove this law, non strikers will be found half way down the pitch.

Its definitely against the spirit of the game but illegal its not. Cricket is supposed to be a gentlemans game and the bowler should as such highlight to the batsman that he can do this if the batsman does not behave.

Having said this modern cricket is not a gentlemans game anymore. T20, fireworks/cheerleaders, power plays. Nothing "gentlemanly" about it. Further on its a real stretch to expect Afghanistan with little to no cricketing traditions or understanding of the gentleman era to behave in any other manner.

Its by the law what the desperate afghani did. However, it is morally incorrect as the batsman was not intending to secure an undue advantage while the bowler was looking for a chance to run him out instead of getting the striker out via a proper ball.
Its not like the batsman was halfway down the pitch. Intent matters. The afghani was more intrested in non Striker end than striker end. Glad they lost pathetically to Pakistan. Why so much desperation to win against Pakistan?
