Srinagar to have International Airport by March

Srinagar, Jan 28: After two years of delay, the up-gradation of Srinagar Airport to international standard will soon be a reality as the deadlock between the airport authorities and the Indian Air Force (IAF) over a vital piece of land is over.
Officials say the new state-of-the-art terminal will be completed in March and the Airport will be renamed as Sheikh Ul Alam (RA) International Airport.
For the airport up-gradation, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) had asked for 14.5 acres of land from the IAF, which occupies thousands of kanals in the area. Sources say for months the IAF delayed the issue and later denied to allot the land.
The land was required for expansion of the Airport terminal building and parking lots. Officials say IAF’s denial had badly hit the construction plans of the building. The issue was brought into the notice of Union Water Resources Minister Prof Saif Ud Din Soz who took up the matter with Defence Minister AK Antony.
Some time back Antony gave a go ahead for the land transfer after which civil administration gave directions for speedy completion of the terminal.
“The matter has been examined. Air Hqrs has agreed for transfer of 14.5 acres of defence land at Srinagar Airport to AAI and also permit AAI to construct additional taxi track linking civil apron to 13 dumb bells,” Antony wrote to Prof Soz.
Prior to this hurdle, work had suffered hiccups leaving the authorities with no option but to set new deadlines.
Last May, Chief Minister had inspected the construction work directed speedy completion of the new complex.
Azad had fixed October 2007 as the deadline. But it was never met. That time the project was already delayed by over a year.
The construction which started in 2004 had to be completed in two years by March 2006.
The Rs 78-crore project sanctioned under the Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Plan, sources said, has no financial hurdles.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Mehboob Iqbal told GK that the work will now be over by March.

Did the previous airport not have the capacity to handle the civil aviation?

If so, thats good to know!

And why is it being named as 'sheikh' xyz airport? Why not an Indian name?

Sheikh Noor-ud-din was a famous Kashmiri saint who belonged to the rishi order. He was born in 1377 CE, corresponding to 779 Hijri and he died at the age of 63 years in the year of 1440 CE or 842 Hijri[1].

He is also known as Nunda Rishi, Alamdar-e-Kashmir and Sheikh-ul-Alam and is the patron saint of Kashmiris, highly revered by both Muslims and Hindus.

Any body know about - kashmir city edge project ???? a stadium , maze , garden, amusement park on the edge of lake in sri nagar.

Alamdar-e-Kashmir is so much better than 'Sheikh' whatever.

Their choice of names sucks! Sheikh conveys an Arabic affinity, not Kashmiri.

Wow niceeeeeeee......

Cool , at last some great news from our beloved Kashmir, if all goes well soon Srinager will join the elite league of Chandigarh, Delhi, Hyderabad, Banglore, Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata....

cheers..

this all a part of massive modernisation that is happening across the indian airports which includes capacity expansion right from the 6 metro airports, to some 30-40 odd (cant recall the exact figure) non metro airports, to some 500 (+) new airports, to numerous merchandise airports across the country to augment massive air transport infrastructure across india, as india sees massive increase in air travellers and air cargo in years to come.

srinagar airport modernisation and capacity expansion comes under the 30-40 non metro airports modernisation plan, the primary authority to carry out the work is AAI which further contracts/sub-contracts various projects to private setups. as we saw with bangalore or hyderabad, that was just the beginning, by 2020 most of indian airports will be completely different to what we see as of date, and the story does not end with the airports, in another few years they plan to completely revamp the railway stations in the metros, which could look similar to an airport from exteriors. now that is some fodder for thought especially when one looks at the present status of all these facilities.
