Weekly inflation registers nominal increase

ISLAMABAD: The sensitive price indicator (SPI) for the week ended on September 30 for the lowest income group up to Rs3,000, has registered a nominal increase of 0.02 percent over the previous week, according to the provisional figures released by the Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) on Monday.
The SPI for the week under review in the abovementioned group was recorded at 285.78 points against 285.72 points registered during the previous week. The weekly SPI has been computed with base 2000-2001=100, covering 17 urban centres and 53 essential items for all income groups and combined.
The SPI for the combined group registered a growth of 0.08 percent as it went up from 272.16 points in the previous week to 272.37 points during the week under review.
The SPI for the combined group during the week under review witnessed an increase of 19.44 percent, against the corresponding week last year.
For the income groups, ranging from Rs3,001-5,000, Rs5,001-12,000 and above Rs12,000, the SPI increased by 0.04 percent, 0.06 percent and 0.07 percent, respectively.
During the week under review, the average prices of 19 items increase, 10 registered decline and the remaining 24 items prices remained unchanged.
The items, which registered increase in their prices included tomatoes, garlic, egg hen (farm), moong pulse (washed), rice basmati (broken), mustard oil, tea (prepared), mutton, masoor pulse (washed), coarse latha, voil (printed), gram pulse (washed), beef, washing soap, vegetable ghee (loose), wheat flour (average quality), curd, vegetable ghee (tin), cooking oil (tin).
The items, which recorded decrease in their average prices during the week under review included onions, bananas, chicken (farm), potatoes, LPG(11kg cylinder), sugar, gur, wheat (average quality), mash pulse (washed) and red chillies.
The items with no change in their average prices during the week under review included rice (Irri-6), bread plain (medium size), milk (fresh), milk (powdered), salt (powdered), tea (packet), cooked beef, cooked dal, cigarettes, lawn, shirting, sandal (gents), sandal (ladies), chappal, kerosene, firewood, electricity bulb, match box, bath soap, gas charges (up to 3.3719MMBTU), electricity charges (1-100 units), petrol, diesel, and telephone local call.
