Pakistan and China have younger Army commanders, so we need younger commanders too. This was Indian Army's main argument in the Supreme Court today while securing a stay on the Armed Forces Tribunal or AFT order that quashed a contentious promotion policy of the Indian Army.
The policy reportedly allows for preferential promotions to officers from select arms.

The top court, which is expected to conduct a more detailed hearing on April 15, said "The country cannot afford to have disgruntled, frustrated and demoralised people in the army." It was referring to a group of officers that had approached the AFT seeking scrapping of the promotion policy.

Arguing on behalf of the army, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told the court that the age profile of Colonels in neighbouring Pakistan and Chinese Armies is 37 years, in Israel its 32 years, while in India it is 41 years. "For the Siachen front, the country needs younger colonels who can work there," said Mr Rohatgi.
Reacting on Mr Rohatgi's arguments, the top court said, "There can be no guarantee that the next war will be in Siachen, it can be in the deserts of Rajasthan."

Mr Rohatgi told the court, "The policy is based on the recommendations of Ajay Vir Singh Committee which aims at reducing the age of battalion commanders."

The Army had erroneously appointed officers of the support and supply line units on pro rata basis to 750 combat positions, which needs to be corrected as "those who face bullets on the war front must get benefits," says Mr Rohatgi.

The officers have a point, a valid one !

.
 what an argument, The reason why pakistan and israeli armies have younger commanders is because of the fighting experience these two have, the more fighting experience means more officers have a chance to show their worth in actual combat situations, naturally paving a way for soldiers to rise in the ranks.

Its really stupidity to compare pakistan and israeli forces commanders ranks with heavy bottle of bolls of rusty indian army.

India is not a bana republic where CJI is over thrown by some army dictator. Everydoby of Govt including Army has to obey the order by Supreme Court.
its worst then that really in yr country.

Unless the army violated the law why are army promotions a matter for the civillian courts ?

. .
I agree that those who 're on the battlefield and who faced bullets 're definitely entitled to better promotional avenues but lets not forget Corps of Engineers and Signals were the first to report to kargil and they faced heavy casualty too.
The sluggishness in response during the kargil war could 've been as a result of some senior officers in GHQ, Delhi.

The court is being fed blatant lies point blank by the army. the average age of Lt. Cols. in Pakistan army is above 45; leave the colonels. I had the honor of receiving a Pakistan army's cap ( a Panjab BN. ) as a memento during my official call on to a Lt. Col. in a UN ( Lt Col heads BN. there) contingent. Then we discussed in detail about age profiles of Indian and Pakistan army.
PS. He is a very nice and mature commander in my opinion. We had an extremely good repo with each other.

I have stated what I have seen, even if you are a coas, you have to make it before 60 in most of the armies, that is obvious, but not a common thing.
