Apparently an Indian company is set to buy this so called desolate airport. I wonder what made them take such a stupid decision?

I don't know from where you came up with this but Almost all international fights to Sri Lanka & Maldives only driverts from India southern cities, that may have some plan to turn it profitable.

If they have a plan to make it profitable, then it was not a such a stupid decision to make this airport after all.
