not a fan of huffpost, but this article really hits the nail on the head. if Duterte really wants to break military ties with the U.S then so be it. we should just walk away and let them negotiate with China without the U.S military backing them.

might as well focus on relations with Vietnam instead of a weak Philippines hitting above it's weight.

Well maybe the they finally realized that outside Europe, US will not fulfill what it says! and they are just a pawn for US

.
Vietnam will cooperate with US for free Aviation and Navigation in East Sea of Vietnam.

.
US is becoming redundant in Asia. She will regress to European territories to guard against Russia by the end of 2030. Every world leader can sense this now. 20 years ago no world leader would be this brazen and nor US reaction would be so muted.

Philippines a pawn?? in the last 10 years I agree, but let's be honest Philippines aren't major players in ASEAN region. China will want to play with them as long as they agree to the 9 dot line.

they are weak militarily, but their economy has major potential.

the ball is China court on how they want to handle a Philippines without U.S super carriers backing them.

the U.S kicks rocks out of Asia, so China becomes the de facto policeman?? I like this scenario. we can cut back how many supercarriers we need from 11 to 5, saving 100's of billions of dollars over decades.

Americans biggest and deadliest weapons are nukes but its Econonic might and dollars

I'm glad you see the light that the US has no business in PH, but i would like to hint that your suggestion of cozy up with VN is basically also a useless move if you are still thinking about containing China. PH is militarily very weak and never stood a chance from the beginning. VN well it's a Communist government and lets be honest here, the Viets shall never trust US again after Vietnam War and the recent events regarding SCS opened up their eyes even wider after seeing US failing to back up PH. Because of the deteriorating relations with PH, Obama is trying to give some goodwill to Laos in order to persuade her to join the containment game. Seriously what was that son of a w**** thinking? :laughcry:
No SEA country shall foolishly want to contain China when there's much more to gain to cooperate with China economically.

You guys need to bring in USDs in the hundreds of billions a year for at least the next 20 years.

Then you guys need to have the ability to put those dollars to good use.

How about building for your so-called Asian allies tons of highways, motorways, railways, metros, bridges, tunnels, ports, airports, power plants, telecom infrastructure etc etc for starters?

for a better future of the American kids, build more high speed rail, not super carriers!

.
building more high speed railway for people daily transportation between large cities in US doesnt justify the cost and benefit factor. Instead they been long investing in Aviation industry, every country had their own strategic planning to cope with their economic problems

HSR is just a representative to more infrastructure investment. The money spent on super carriers should go to roads, bridges, or airports as well.

This is US's own assessment on its infrastructure system. The aviation looks more desperate than rail.

its their own assessments, but still air transportation is the most preffered method in US

as for ur suggestion for more infra building in US like more HSR coverage to cover all of the States like what China did today, if there is lies incentive to building such project (profit, either it will be long or short) i would be sure they had been built it since decades ago.

If such an attitude really come from the respect to PH‘s sovereignty and the way its people choose,I would be glad to say the US still represents a model of neutral and confident international power. But the fact is the US is no longer the one which enbrace isolationism or the one which had just win the Cold War.
"focus on relations with Vietnam" ← bitter cover up:usflag:

.
We should agree to Duterte's request that the US leave. Once he has taken the Philippines down the drain and get booted out, the next leader will ask US back in. Simple as that.

to be fair, I dont think China will really extort the Philippines beyond the goals already stated.

It would be counterproductive to China's goals in the SCS seeing as Duterte is essentially groveling to them. I think they will be fairly generous assuming Duterte continues groveling, but of course they will keep the islands and will put the conditions of the economic help on accepting China's claims. From here forward China will essentially have control of whether Filipinos can fish in the SCS.

Here is the example.

MANILA, Philippines -- Days before leaving for a state visit to China, President Rodrigo Duterte said Monday he would set aside the Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal issue for now but vowed to ask the Chinese government to allow Filipino fishermen to go to the area.

Duterte is scheduled to visit China from Oct. 18 to 21 to strengthen the ties between Manila and Beijing, which has been strained by the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) dispute.

The four-day state visit will come as Duterte is seeking to broaden alliances with China and Russia while engaging in a spat with the United States over his bloody war on illegal drugs.

“Pupunta ako ng China. Okay tayo sa kanila. Huwag muna nating pakialaman yung Scarborough. Di natin kaya. Magalit man tayo, hangin lang (I will go to China. We are okay with them. Let’s not dwell on the Scarborough issue for now. We can’t solve it even if we get angry),” Duterte said during an agrarian reform forum in Lamitan, Basilan.

“We will ask them to allow our fishermen brothers to return (to the shoal),” he added.

Duterte is optimistic about his talks with the Chinse government, noting that it has already allowed the Philippines to export bananas and pineapple to China.

“I suspect that they really want to help us,” the president said.

Panatag Shoal is located 124 nautical miles from the nearest point in Zambales, well within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.

China started occupying the shoal in 2012 after Chinese surveillance ships barred a Philippine Navy vessel from apprehending Chinese fishermen who had poached endangered species.

China has since maintained its presence in the shoal, barring Filipino fishermen from entering the traditional fishing route.

Last month, the National Security Council reported that Chinese Coast Guard vessels had harassed Filipino fishermen in Panatag Shoal despite calls by Duterte for China to allow entry in the area.

Foreign Affairs secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. said in an earlier interview that the Philippines would use “quiet diplomacy” to address the issue.

Duterte has repeatedly said that he would not go to war with China over the maritime row because it would result in a “massacre’ of Philippine troops.

A Hague-based arbitral tribunal ruled in July that China’s expansive claim in the South China Sea has no legal basis. The claim, which covers virtually the entire South China Sea, including Panatag Shoal, is being contested by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan. The court ruled that the Philippines has sovereign rights over the Panganiban (Mischief) Reef, Ayungin (Second Thomas) Shoal, and Recto (Reed) Bank, areas located off Palawan that are also being claimed by China.

Although the tribunal said it was not ruling on the sovereignty over the Panatag Shoal, it found that China had violated its duty to respect the traditional fishing rights of Filipinos by halting access to the shoal in 2012.

Given that the issue of sovereignty over the shoal has yet to be solved, the Philippine government said that whoever owns those rocks has sovereignty or rights of “full ownership” over them including their territorial sea.

Solicitor General Jose Calida said last August that the implication of the court’s ruling is that the waters immediately beyond the territorial sea around Panatag Shoal are part of the Philippines’ EEZ.

He said the Philippines has “sovereign rights” to explore, exploit, converge and manage the natural resources in its EEZ.

Asking Chinese permission to fish in its own EEZ. If that isn't submission I dont know what is.
