''War rules in ancient India are still the world''s best''

Kolkata, Feb 27 (PTI) Wars in ancient India were more civilised, humane and ethical than the conventional strifes of today, according to Bangladeshi writer and human rights campaigner Shahriar Kabir.
"The do''s and don''ts followed during wars in ancient India were more civilised and humane than those followed now," he said.
Citing examples from Indian epics, he said the wars followed ethical norms like non-use of weapons on the unarmed enemy, no strike after sunset and humane treatment of prisoners of war.
"Lakshmana and Arjuna are said to have refused to use weapons of mass destruction in wars against Ravana and the Kauravas, although such weapons have been used in modern-day wars," Kabir said during the release of his book on war, war criminals and their trial last evening.
Kabir''s relentless campaign for the trial of war criminals of the 1971 Bangladesh liberation struggle had prompted the Sheikh Hasina government to set up a Special Tribunal for their trial.
"The trials of the prisoners are needed to wipe out the scourge of war and prevent genocides," he said.
Bangladesh deputy high-commissioner in Kolkata Mustafizur Rahaman said the government was taking all steps to ensure that the trials followed international conventions and remained above controversy.
"Once complete, the trials will wipe out a black chapter from the history of Bangladesh," he said.

Adding to the topic:
1. In Indian war It was prohibited to kill scholar(Pundit) Cattle (Cow) and civilians.
2. If the King was down The kingdom was taken over by winner and he was suppose to treat the civilians as their own
3. There was no concept of plunder, No loot, The war was only to expand the territory or fulfill the ambition.

While the war rule of Arabs was totally opposite.. Till THE iNDIAN king understood there war strategy, they were annihilated.. Later maratha understood the way to conquer arabs and he freed 80% of India from them...

Yeah arabs, mongols, persians...there was no pakistan. But yes the jamidars in frontier area who converted to ISLAM used to request the arabs, mongols and persians to attack on India. Even today they wish the same.

The ethics were broken during the Mahabharata. It started with the brutal killing of Abhimanyu. He was 16 yrs old and fought with 7 chariot warriors more than twice his age. Karna was killed by Arjuna when extracting his wheel. Drona was told that his son has died (elephant with the same name had died), gives up weapons, was killed.

Yeah ethics were broken, but they were minor as compared to the no ethics war conducted by foreign rulers who came later.

He was not a child at that age. During that era, teens were considered to be grown up and fit for war. Also Abhmaniyus killing was because of good planning, there was no rule broken there.

Karna was killed by Arjuna when extracting his wheel. Drona was told that his son has died (elephant with the same name had died), gives up weapons, was killed.
All those were done so as to ensure minimum loss of life. Karna was way too powerful for anyone. Not to mention Dronacharya was their teacher. You remembered that Arjun even refused to do all this but then Lord Krishna took his class and Geeta emerged.

No rules in war, there has been times when enemies took advantage of these " civilised, humane and ethical " practices against the Hindus. Marathas were very smart, but their victory was short lived when the British came. And some one said Marathas took 80% of India from the Arabs. Mughals are not Arabs.
