Vietnamese tourists to Taiwan hit new record

Taipei, July 30 (CNA) New Taipei City and EVA Airways, one of Taiwan's major airlines, said Monday they will work together to boost tourism from Vietnam, which is a fast growing market.

As part of the initiative, they said, representatives of EVA and New Taipei will visit Ho Chi Minh City Aug. 3-5 to promote New Taipei tourism and launch discounted independent travel packages to the northern Taiwan city.

Tourism Bureau data shows visitor arrivals from Vietnam rose by an annual 95 percent last year to 380,000, the highest growth rate among all Southeast Asian countries.

In the first five months of this year, arrivals from Vietnam totaled 600,000, the city government said, expressing optimism over the market for EVA.

Showing how little Thailand thinks of its western visitors these days, the Airports of Thailand has designated half or more of its immigration counters at five major airports to Chinese tourists, despite them comprising only a third of all visitors.

Tourism Police deputy chief Pol. Maj. Gen. Surachet Hakpal and Region 2 Immigration Division boss Pol. Maj. Gen. Pritthipong Prayoonsiri opened the first of 18 “Chinese-only” lanes at Suvarnabhumi International Airport Friday night.

Surachet said Chinese visitors – who now make up more than one in three international arrivals in Thailand – are the Kingdom’s “VIPs”. Chinese visitors could get assistance from the gate to baggage claim, he said.

Thai officials justified the dedicated lanes by saying the country didn’t want to be seen as taking advantage of its golden goose. They didn’t mention, however, that a half-million Chinese visitors canceled trips to Thailand after 47 mainlanders were killed in a Phuket boat sinking last month.

For tourists and expats from every other country who already has to deal with hour-long immigration lines, the Chinese boot-licking only adds insult to injury.
