The Government of the Czech Republic has officially recognised the Vietnamese community living in the country as an ethnic minority group, according to the Vietnamese Embassy in Czech.
The recognition came following the Czech Governments decision to expand its Council of Ethnic Minorities, which approved the nomination of two members representing Vietnam and Belarus .
Under the decision, Pham Huu Uyen from the Van Lang Citizens Association represents Vietnamese people in the council.
According to Tran Viet Hung, Vice President of the Vietnamese Association in Czech Republic , this is a good news for the 65,000-strong Vietnamese community living in the country as they will receive assistance from the Czech Government to further develop their native tradition, culture and language.
In some localities with high numbers of Vietnamese residents, Vietnamese children may be taught in their mother tongue, he said.
Vietnamese people will have the right to use Vietnamese in public places as well as at courts, he said, adding that they are permitted to set up radio and television programmes in Vietnamese.-VNA
