Vietnam veterans debunk government efforts to rewrite history

Reporter's File

US President Barak Obama has unveiled a $65-million campaign to commemorate the history of the war in Vietnam.

However, veterans who served in the war say it is an attempt to rewrite history and does not acknowledge the real lessons learned some 40 years later.

It is called the Full Disclosure Campaign, a Veteran for Peace effort to speak truth to power and keep alive the antiwar perspective on the American war in Vietnam.

Organizers want an alternative to the government’s efforts to rewrite history in a bid to sanitize and mythologize the US conflict in the Vietnam, legitimizing the continuation of further wars.

Nakba Day tragedy

The 66th anniversary of Nakba Day (Day of Catastrophe) was marked with large festivals as hundreds of thousands of Palestinians marched through the streets to commemorate the day when 700,000 Palestinians were driven from their homeland.

But it was marred by tragedy, as in one demonstration outside Ofer prison near Ramallah, two Palestine youths were shot and killed by Israeli soldiers in an apparently unprovoked crime.

The port of Mariel in Cuba

The Cuban government continues its march toward progress, with important changes to improve their economy.

Among the most important steps is the new foreign investment law that brings support to the Mariel Port, an important engineering feat that is starting to mark an important point in the process of modernization and development in Latin America.

Divided families in Kashmir

Hundreds of men migrated to Pakistan-administered Kashmir at the outset of the insurgency in Indian ruled Kashmir in the 1980’s.

Decades later, they have returned to the Indian side along with their families, under the government’s ‘return and rehabilitation’ policy. However, the ‘home-coming’ has not been as easy as expected. The decision to return has resulted in repentance, separation and suffering.
