HANOI, Vietnam—Vietnam has rejected China’s protest over a new Vietnamese law that reasserts territorial claims over two West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) island groups China and other countries consider their own.
The Chinese accusations that Vietnam’s law was illegal and invalid were groundless, Foreign Ministry spokesman Luong Thanh Nghi said in a statement posted on the ministry’s website late Thursday.
Vietnam’s National Assembly overwhelmingly passed the new maritime law Thursday asserting Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Spratlys and Paracels, and Nghi said this was a “normal lawmaking activity” and Chinese opposition to it was regrettable.
China had summoned the Vietnamese ambassador Thursday to lodge a protest and repeat China’s position that it has sole jurisdiction over the Spratly and Paracel islands.
China claims virtually the entire West Philippine Sea and its island groups, and its dispute with Vietnam and other rival claimants occasionally erupts into open confrontation. The islands, many of them occupied by garrisons from the various claimants, sit amid some of the world’s busiest commercial sea lanes, along with rich fishing grounds and potential oil and gas deposits.
Nghi said Vietnam has legal and historical bases to affirm its sovereignty and that Vietnam’s new law will not affect the process seeking a solution to the disputes.
Vietnam also “strongly protested” a step China’s Hainan province has taken to consolidate its administration over the disputed areas. Chinese officials have said the new entity, Sansha City administration, replaces three separate management offices and is intended to boost development in the Paracels, Spratlys and other areas and better protect Hainan’s marine environment.
Vietnam and China both claim the Paracels. The two countries along with the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan also claim all or parts of the Spratlys which sit on one of the world’s busiest commercial sea lanes and potential oil and gas reserves.

Vietnam slams China protest over Spratlys

HANOI: Vietnam has defended a new maritime law claiming sovereignty over the fiercely-contested Paracel and Spratly islands, dismissing protests from China as “absurd.”

Vietnam’s National Assembly on Thursday adopted the Law on the Sea, which places the disputed mineral-rich islands under Hanoi’s sovereignty, prompting Beijing to summon the Vietnamese ambassador to oppose the “illegal and invalid” move.

China and Vietnam, as well as other neighboring nations, are locked in long-standing territorial disputes over the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea), including the Spratlys and Paracels.

“Vietnam resolutely rejects the absurd accusations by the Chinese side,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Luong Thanh Nghi said in a statement posted on the ministry’s website on Thursday night.

The new law—the first adopted by Hanoi covering the West Philippine Sea—is “normal law-making activity,” he said, adding that Vietnam had “indisputable legal basis and historical evidence of its sovereignty over the islands.”

“More seriously, [Vietnam] strongly opposes China’s establishment of the so-called ‘Sansha City,’” Nghi said.

China said on Thursday that it had elevated the administrative status of the Nansha (Spratly) and Xisha (Paracel) islands from a county to a prefectural-level district under the control of the city of Sansha.

The official Thanh Nien newspaper reported on Friday that the law was adopted by 495 out of 496 deputies and will come into force in January 2013.

China and South Vietnam once administered different parts of the Paracels, but after a brief conflict in 1974 Beijing took control of the entire group of islands.

Vietnam holds several of the larger Spratly Islands and neighboring countries have long been locked in diplomatic rows over their conflicting claims.

China says that it has sovereign rights to the West Philippine Sea, believed to sit atop vast oil and gas deposits, including areas close to the coastlines of other countries and hundreds of kilometers from its own land mass.

The disputed region is a key trading route for the United States, which has opposed Beijing’s attempts to settle conflicting claims bilaterally, repeatedly calling instead for the peaceful resolution of disputes.

Taiwan, Vietnam, Brunei, China, Malaysia, and the Philippines all claim parts of the West Philippine Sea.

With our new law once its active on next year 1/2013, that will allow all our forces has more chance to protect our fishermen that being harassing by CMS day by day. It's also give more power to use force if needed to protect our territories. It's seems war on the SCS will happening soon. Let's see !!!

I don't think so, am think your government is more pragmatic than you. She'll be happy to keep the 40 shoals in SCS and leave other disputes to future generations. All these bellicose rhetoric is a defense strategy to ensure the Chinese Government won't attempt to take her other possessions by internationalize the public opinions. It's a very smart move, IMO, because she succeeded to bring attentions to every Chinese move.

But then China might have some arrows in her quiver that we don't know about.

Well, in some cases the modern weapons are only for the last option. The main option that "Are you willing to die for you country?" and I belief you have my answer.

Who stop Mongol Empire that Chinese can't do? but we are stop them 3 times at that time no countries that can survived under Mongols horses and swords.

This time, we will stop you if our national security has breach or being harm.

In ASIA, we the one only deal with China from time to time and you know that! We'll see !!!

Overall, the "Great Han's" so-called just some kind abused. The true faces of Han's are chicken:

Han's ruled by Mongol VS Viet Nam does not ruled by Mongols even thought Mongols tried pretty hard [3 times]

Han's ruled by Manchu's VS Viet Nam does not rule by Manchu

Han's ruled by Qing VS Viet Nam does not rule by Qing more than that we kicked Qing out badly.

Han's entered to Viet Nam 1979, we kicked them out.

Han's entered to East Sea, we will feed them for fishes. [Futures]
