Police halted the protests against the new economic zones

Protests have broken out in Vietnam against plans for new economic zones, amid fears that Chinese investors will dominate the areas.

Police reportedly detained more than a dozen people in the capital Hanoi and halted demonstrations in other cities.

Some carried anti-China banners, including one reading "No leasing land to China even for one day".

The government proposed a law last year that would give foreign investors a 99-year lease on Vietnamese land.

The bill offers them greater incentives and fewer restrictions, in an attempt to promote growth in target areas.

The protesters suspect that the Communist government will award Chinese investors a lease over three islands in the South China Sea, amid tensions between the two countries over disputed territory there.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc last week told local media the 99-year term would be reduced, although he did not specify the new length.

And on Saturday, the government announced a vote on the draft legislation would be delayed to allow further scrutiny.

Roughly $5 trillion worth of global trade passes through the South China Sea annually, and a number of countries in the area claim disputed islands in the area.

Vietnamese protests broke out in 2012 over the maritime dispute, although police quickly halted the demonstrations.

Anthropologically, one can easily differentiate a Northerner and a Southerner (if he is not from the North or ethnic Hoa), however, the difference is not too much. I believe the Southerners (recent Northerner immigration not counted) is a mixture of Cham, Khmer, Hoa (ethnic Chinese) and a little of North Vietnamese. Even the ancient Viet who came from Ngu Quang (five Quang provinces, including Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Quang Nam, ...in Central Vietnam) to exploit the South seems to be not really ethnic Northern Vietnamese, but Vieticized Cham people.

That is my understanding of history.

However, the main difference is in our culture and living philosophy. While Northerners believe in hard work, disciplines, family, ethic, especially education, southerners does not respect all of the above (or respect, but not same as Northerners). That is why a poor, illiterate Northern farmer who come to the south for living, within 20 years, can become rich and his children can study at universities, while his Southerners neighbors still live in poverty and their children are still illiterate. That is why, the North could beat the South in the war, although economically, we were far behind, and the South army fought together with 650,000 well-equipped American troops while the North fought by itself. And that is why now Northerners seems to found and control all major companies countrywide, whether private or state-owned.
