TOKYO: Vietnam agreed on Friday to invite a Japanese warship to visit its strategic Cam Ranh Bay base on the South China Sea and for the two countries to hold their first ever joint naval exercise, Kyodo News reported.

The agreement was reached during a meeting in Hanoi between Japanese Minister of Defence Gen Nakatani and his Vietnamese counterpart, Phung Quang Thanh, the news agency said.

The visit to the port, which is close to the disputed waters of the Spratly Islands where China is building bases on reclaimed islands, may further irritate China after a recent U.S. naval patrol close to the man-made outcrops prompted Chinese protests.

The United States defended the action as a freedom-of-navigation patrol.

While Japan has avoided antagonizing China with similar operations, it is nonetheless forging security ties with Southeast Asia nations, particular Vietnam and the Philippines, that oppose China's ambitions in the South China Sea.

Vietnam has allowed vessels from other countries including the United States and Russia to dock in Cam Ranh Bay, but foreign visits to the facility, which is home to several of Vietnam's Russian-built Kilo-Class submarines, are rare.

Established as a base by the United States during the Vietnam War, Cam Ranh Bay was later used largely by Russian forces.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has also been visiting Vietnam this week.

Looks like our Chinese friends are getting nervous that more and more evidences of Asia turning against China.
It is just Japan-Philippine-Vietnam alliance backed by United States. They are just a corner of the Asia while most Asian countries while most countries support China through "One Belt, One Road" and AIIB programs. Even this alliance is very weak with different goals: Vietnam tries to balance China and United States to avoid being sinicized, it just replaces Soviet Union with USA; Japan tries to transfer possible military conflicts in ECS to SCS while trying its best to establish FTA among east asia; Philippine is just a nerd without any economics and military.

While China plays constructive role in "One Belt, One Road" and AIIB programs, United States is playing a destructive role in its pivotal to Asia program. For each country to become pivotal, they need to prepare for War while for each country in Chinese programs, they can enjoy economic developments.

With the lessons of Iraq, Libya and Syria, Vietnam and Philippine need to worry that they would be the next. During last two decades, almost all countries in the eye of United States foreign policy become separated and torn by wars.

There is a high possibility that Vietnam will become next Ukraine. The unification of Pro-China North Vietnam and Anti-China South Vietnam just happened 40 years ago and remains very weak.

The support is symbolic and while symbolism is the easiest to latch onto and to claim legitimacy, it is also the quickest to abandon when reality comes intruding.

Who controlled the historical famous Silk Road ? No one, really. The historical Silk Road was a symbol of international and cultural interactions. The reality is that as that physical route traverses countries, each segment of that symbol was controlled by that respective country.

So are you saying that while Asia supports the symbolism of the modern day Silk Road, they are also supporting China's claim to the entirety of the South China Sea ?

We would love to see any official documentation for that.

Living with illusion, you do understand nothing about Vietnam.

With the United States's pivotal to Asia, the support of Silk Road really means the support of China. Japan and Philippine are on the anti-China sides. They show no interest in AIIB and "One Belt, One Road" programs. Japan is actually eager to sabotage these programs, even though United States is not doing any sabotages. United States' pivotal to Asia program polarizes many ordinary program. It is forcing Asian Countries to choose China or United States. Many Asian countries, supporting China including India, just want to show their independence and their ability to withstand US pressures.

Vietnam only can get unified when the north is dominated. Current VCP Politburo members are dominated by people from North. However, there are more and more central committee members from the South. There is highly possible for the division of VCP similar to Gorbachev-Yeltsin, especially with current economic dynamics.
