Three Vietnamese citizen journalists who wrote about human rights abuses, corruption and foreign policy have been given jail sentences ranging from four to 12 years.

The cases against the two men and one woman were among the most high-profile undertaken by the country's communist rulers as they step up their campaign against bloggers and other pro-democracy activists.

The three are founder members of the Free Journalists Club, a group of citizen journalists who posted their work on the internet. They were found guilty of spreading "propaganda against the state".

The US, which is seeking closer economic ties with Vietnam but also pressing it on human rights, has criticised the sentences. "The government's treatment of Dieu Cay appears to be inconsistent with Vietnam's obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, as well as the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights relating to freedom of expression and due process," it said in a statement.

Barack Obama had previously mentioned the case of one of the bloogers – Nguyen Van Hai, who wrote under the pen name Dieu Cay – in a speech that called for greater freedom for media around the world.

In late July, the mother of another defendant, Ta Phong Tan, self-immolated outside a government office to protest against the treatment of her daughter. The mother died of her injuries on the way to hospital. Tan, a former police officer, wrote a blog called Justice and Truth that criticised police abuse of power.

Nguyen Van Hai criticised the government for its handling of tensions with China over disputed islands in the South China Sea.

International rights groups had condemned the trial and called for the release of the defendants. "Vietnam's arbitrary use of vaguely worded national security laws to imprison critics of the government means bloggers are bearing the brunt of this assault on freedom of expression," Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement last week.

.
Without saying whether the Vietnamese government right or wrong to jail those bloggers because I haven't provided with enough details of the actual cases, it seems every country in the world has to ask the permission of the US before it jails its citizens, otherwise it can be labeled as human right violator. So the only super in the world wants to be the sole judge, prosecutor and policeman of the world too, eh?

those bloggers are supported by Christian and Christian harmed VN alot in history specially in French and US's colonial time. We wanna be friend with US, but we also don't wanna be split up by Jasmine revolt, too.

Like they say: a needle can not have two sharp ends or Bush: either you with me or against me. To befriend the US is like inviting a wolf to your own den, very hard to invite out before troubles brew. Yes her NGO hooligans love Jammie tea and they pay good prices for them too. Egypt got rid them but China is having troubles because there are so many of them hiding among the expats.

Keep your eyes on Myanmar I can almost feel it's going to be the next trouble spot. Ever wonder why people say: where ever the Americans go these days, they leave with deaths and destruction.

I find the punishment is too hard regardless what they said and wrote.

PM DUng is in a very hard time of his political career(bcz of the collapse of VNline,VN shin, tycoon Kien was arrested etc), so, maybe he need a strong action to warn the others who are criticizing him now.

As usual, the Christian who always against the communist govt. will get the axe firts .

I've an question, are there any popular web services banned in Vietnam?

. . .
Sometime , Facebook is banned for home users and it's strickly banned for public internet

Youtube is OK.

I think Facebook is not officially banned in VN. Communist government sets up a technical barrier to restrict the use of it as little as possible [communism was afraid that informations which they cannot control, will be spread].
I have not seen any website banned, but a few are difficult to access...

Sounds like Vietnam is ripe for revolution :azn:

It is an East Asia Spring?

. .
@Battle, Vietnam is in the SouthEast though.

In my opinion:

Northeast Asia: Japan, Korea, China, Mongolia, Taiwan

Southeast Asia: 10 ASEAN countries, including Vietnam.

East Asia = Northeast Asia + Southeast Asia.

East Asia is considered to be a part of the Far East, which describes the region's geographical position in relation to Europe rather than its location within Asia. However, in contrast to the United Nations definition, East Asia commonly is used to refer to the eastern part of Asia, as the term implies. Observers preferring a broader definition of 'East Asia' often use the term Northeast Asia to refer to the greater China area, the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, and Japan, with Southeast Asia covering the ten ASEAN countries. This usage, which is increasingly widespread in economic and diplomatic discussion, is at odds with the historical meanings of both "East Asia" and "Northeast Asia".[14][15][16] The Council on Foreign Relations defines Northeast Asia as Japan and Korea.[3]
