Vietnam: East or Southeast Asian?

“Vietnam, you can’t sit with us.” Vietnam is always left out of former Sinosphere groupings because it’s often grouped with other Southeast Asian countries. Even tho culturally Vietnam really has more in common with China, Korea and Japan"

I think Vietnam culturally, customs, cuisine, lifestyle, and architecture are more East Asian because of the sinicization influence.

And genetically North Vietnamese are more East Asian looking not much different than Chinese, Korean Japanese. While South Vietnamese look more like Southeast Asian similar to Cambodians. I have Vietnamese friends who look just like any Chinese if they don't tell you they are Vietnamese.

It's a defining trait for East Asian countries to hate each other.

So Vietnam doesn't qualify as an East Asian country. They are generally only anti-China, but pro-Japan and pro-Korea.

It is more like East Asian countries in social form and culture, and Southeast Asian countries in geography.

Great video. Very interesting and informative. Easy listening voice too.

I think he answers his question near the start of the video when he shows how people and cultures of the region have migrated and mixed. Both.

At 3:19 why does the Chinese man have blue or grey eyes?

Probably due to age of the paper used the painting/drawing color is starting to worn out with time. And it gives this grey color look. Who knows what anicent dynasty is this drawing from. it must've been very old.

Anthropologically Vietnamese received a wave of migration 2000 years ago, transforming facial feature from paleo-mongoloid to neo-mongoloid. The transformation is still happening in Thailand.

In North Vietnam, the transformation largely completed, while in the South it is less transformed.

Vietnam is culturally East Asian, anthropologically 90% East Asian.

Both east and souteast are geographic terms so its clearly a southeast nation.

what is "sinosphere" sounds like the surest way to irritate japanese, koreans and vietnamese.

This word was probably created by them. cause this word is more quoted by Japanese and Koreans than by the Chinese.
