Vietnam Asks U.S., Japan and EU for Help Accessing Vaccines

Vietnam is seeking assistance from the U.S., Japan, European Union and United Nations organizations to help it obtain Covid-19 vaccines, according to a post on the Ministry of Health’s website.

Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long asked U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink to help Vietnam access vaccines from American drug-makers and for Washington to donate vaccines to the Southeast Asian country, it said. Long also is seeking U.S. technical and financial support for its vaccination campaign.

Long asked Japan for help obtaining vaccines and to transfer technologies for vaccine production and trials to Vietnam, according to the post. The minister made similar requests to the European Union.

Vietnam needs 150 million doses of vaccines this year, it said. Vietnam has inoculated more than 51,000 people as of April 1, the health ministry said on its website.

Vietnam has a deal with AstraZeneca Plc. to supply 30 million doses. The country expected to get by the second quarter about 4.9 million doses through the World Health Organization-backed Covax program and about 30 million doses between July and September.

The country received 811,200 doses of AstraZeneca through the Covax program on Thursday, less than the 1.37 million expected on March 25 due to production delays.

The government has said it is in talks with other vaccines producers, including Pfizer-BioNTech, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna Inc.

The problem in Vietnam now is that, no one wants to use AstraZenaca vaccines, even the supply is abundant. 5 millions doses have already arrived, but only ~ 50,000 used. No one have paid to get vaccinated, only people who are forced to be, e.g. doctors, nurses, etc. Several small incidents, including high temp,, have been recorded.

We are waiting for the result about Sputnik negotiation. Otherwise, the whole vaccination program may collapse with current situation. There is very few patients in Vietnam now and people do not need to rush. I doubt any people will pay to get vaccinated by any Western vaccines for now.

The article shows that Vietnamese goverment may want to abandon AstraZeneca altogether.

If Vietnam gets the technology and makes it then Ok. Otherwise the chance Vietnam imports the vaccine direct from China and distributes to population for use is zero.

Many things, which are made by the same technology in different countries, have different quality. Is this something strange?

No side effect in such large scale founded by either Chinese or Russian vaccines, even after they are used widely in the world. And I do not believe Western "free press' will hide such incidents, as they do with Western vaccines.

Not reported does not mean not happened. Do you seriously think vaccines made in Russia and China have no side effects?

Sinopharm and AstraZeneca are completely in different category.

They are in the same category. They use virus spike protein to provoke human immune response.

No those vaccines are still trialed. We need vaccines now hence the urgent request to the world. Vietnam domestic vaccines come in third quarter. There are 4 vaccines in total under development.
