They have being integrated to the bigger Sinhalese culture to a significant percentage. AFAIK only the elders remember about their rich African heritage.

That's very weird, in South Africa and other parts of the continent, it's a racist term for Blacks.

Though the word Kaffir is indeed used in derogatory term especially in South Africa towards black people it does not such connotations in Sri Lanka, It merely describes it's ethnic group

The word Kaffir is an obsolete English term once used to designate natives from the African Great Lakes and Southern Africa coasts. In South Africa, it became a slur. "Kaffir" derives in turn from the Arabic kafir, "unbeliever".
