He went down fighting like a soldier, killing two terrorist scum with his hand gun and finally detonated a grenade to avoid being captured and tortured by the ISIS scum.

Russia's new hero: Pilot shouted 'this is for our guys' before killing himself with a grenade to avoid being captured by jihadists after his plane was shot down in Syria

A Russian pilot downed by rebel fighters in Syriakilled himself with a grenade to avoid being captured by the jihadists, Moscow has confirmed.

Video footage filmed by the rebels themselves, sees Major Roman Filipov shouting 'This is for our guys!' before detonating the explosives as the fighters surround him.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that the 33-year-old was 'fighting the rebels until the last minute' and detonated the grenade when they approached.

Maj. Filipov, from Vladivostok, east Russia has been awarded Kremlin's highest honour - the Hero of Russia medal - posthumously.

In a statement seen by Russia Today, the Ministry said the pilot had ejected from his Sukhoi 25SM fighter jet after being hit with a missile from a portable surface-to-air system in Idlib, Syria.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was too early to say who had supplied the weapons system which rebels had used to shoot down the plane, but that it was extremely worrying that such rockets were falling into the hands of 'terrorists.'

After landing, Maj. Filipov remained in radio contact with the Russian airbase in Khmeimim, Syria, and reported shooting and killing two jihadist fighters with his hand gun as they closed in on him.

But realising his situation was hopeless, he pulled the pin on his grenade to kill himself, reportedly killing more rebels in the blast.

Hero pilot Roman Filipov was 'brave as a lion' and had followed in the footsteps of his father as a combat air force man, it was revealed today.

As the Kremlin saluted him, Russian defence officials vowed to support his widow Olga and their two young children, along with his parents.

The 33 year old had wanted to be a pilot from the moment he first went to school, said his class teacher today.

He came from a military family and his father Nikolay was a decorated air force pilot who flew combat missions during the war in Chechnya.

His mother Elena and younger sister Marina also served in the Russian military.

The director of School No. 85 in Voronezh, Galina Klepikova, said: 'He got mainly the highest marks…

'Teachers speak of him only well: he was fit, modest, blue-eyed, fair-haired, neat. The boy was fond of sports, he studied well. He dreamed of being a pilot.'

His class teacher Lyudmila Lazareva said: 'He was never childish, but adult, serious, reasonable, and balanced. He was among the best.

'He had a sense of justice. That was how he behaved - he knew what was right.'

When she heard to his heroic death she said: 'I was so shocked. I was just in panic…. For me, my pupils are always children.

'This poor child - that's what I think now.'

His classmate Roman Dudin said his father had been his inspiration.

'When we were studying [at school], there was a conflict in Chechnya and his father took part in hostilities. He was a combat pilot.'

Major Filipov lived with his wife and two children in the Far East off Russia in Chernigovka, Primorsky region.

Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu called on Vladimir Putin to posthumously grant the Su-25 pilot the Hero of Russia honour, the country's highest award.

A spokesman for Shoigu said the defence ministry 'will fully support' his widow and children and also his parents.

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: 'The pilot died heroically…. We are proud of our heroes.'

A military source said: 'He was brave as a lion and died a hero. We have only pride in him.'

A spokesman said: 'The pilot did his best to keep the plane in the air as long as he could. He managed to report to his commanders he had been attacked with a missile.

'Filipov ejected himself and landed near the terrorists-held village of Tell-Debes. Until the last moments of his life he fought agianst the terrorists with his hand weapon.

'Filipov blew himself up with a grenade after being heavily injured and surrounded by terrorists when the attackers were meters away.'

He was 'an experienced pilot - it was not his first tour in Syria.'

'Major Roman Filipov accomplished dozens of combat missions in Syria with flying colours to destroy international terrorist fighters and escort humanitarian convoys of the Russian centre for reconciliation of opposing sides to populated localities liberated from terrorists.'

His commanders saw him as a 'brave pilot' who 'enjoyed well-deserved authority in his regiment and amongst his subordinates in the squadron.'

He was a graduate of the Krasnodar Military Aviation Institute, and had climbed every step of the career ladder, from a senior pilot to a squadron deputy commander, said the defence ministry.

A bit odd for a pilot to have a handgrenade in the cockpit. He's going to have it on him during the harsh forces that happen with an ejection? Maybe it is not your typical grenade.

every pilot has his ammo pack with him and the ejection seat also holds much equipment such as transponder, recorder, beacon, First aid kit and so on. It is very expensive to train pilots.

I can see putting it in the ejection seat. Having it strapped to your body does not sound like a smart idea if you are bailing at 500mph.

A bit strange indeed. I guess it must be something Russian pilots in Syria choose to carry just in case? Russkies have a history fighting ISIS types in Chechenya and they know it's better to be die fighting than to fall into their hands alive.

Interesting.
Brave fighter.

Much respect
Indeed. Reminds me of the Russian special forces guy who called in an airstrike on his position after he was surrounded by ISIS fighters:

When you say us, do you mean PAKISTAN or U. S?

Muslims.
The highest number of casualties at hands of these rabid dogs are muslims. They are using our name but they have nothing to do with us. Dear friend. Blood of innocent people is on their hands. They are not muslims even by muslim standards man.

Can you tell what exactly ISIS does so you say they are not Muslims?

In italian RAI TV an expert said evrything they do stands 1:1 in the quran.

Dear Friend,
Many Western channels have "experts" making all sorts of claims about Islam.

But the reality my friend is that our Prophet (P.B.U.H) said toward the last years of his life that we will see people who will CLAIM to be muslim. Not only that they will claim to be best of muslims. They will pray alot. They will read Quran alot but their religion will not go past their throats (meaning their hearts will be contrary to real Islam). In Arabic/Islam they are called Al-Khawarij

Here I will quote you Prophet Muhammad's(P.B.U.H) exact hadith here:

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “There will be division and sectarianism in my nation and a people (the Kharijites) will come with beautiful words and evil deeds. They will recite the Quran but it will not pass beyond their throats. They will leave the religion as an arrow leaves its target and they will not return to it as the arrow does not return to its bow. They are the worst of the creation. Blessed are those who fight them and are killed by them. They call to the Book of Allah but they have nothing to do with it. Whoever fights them is better to Allah than them.”

Source: Sunan Abī Dāwūd 4765, Grade: Sahih(authentic) according to Al-Albani

These groups were starting to emerge in his time and they were fought and defeated by the very close companions of Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H).

The above hadith says they call to book of God but they dont have anything to do with it. Based on this most Islamic scholars do not consider them to be muslim.

Note(To explain some Islamic concepts mentioned above that u might not be acquanted with):
  • Hadith are sayings of Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H) inspired through divine revelation.
  • Sunan Abi Dawud is name of a book where compilation of Hadith can be found by person named Abu Dawud.
  • Hadith number of above mentioned hadith is 4765
  • The above hadith was classed sahih meaning truthful by a scholar named Al-Albani.
So my friend this is evidence that these people are not from amongst us. They are indeed terrorists for us first and foremost than any other nation.

And lastly, I would advice you to not blindly trust these "experts". But consult genuine practicing muslims for their views. Many of these "experts" are hatemongerers and would like you to completely shun us away. They might have high and lofty degrees in Islam or Middle East studies but they use them for nefarious designs in exchange for small sums.

I sincerely hope this answers your question.

"Experts" receive millions of $$ to give what is allegedly "truth" but all you need to do is seek opinion from any knowledgable muslim or just walk into a masjid and ask a knowledgable imam for opinion. Heck even if you only look at who is dying in most numbers as a result of actions of these psycopaths will give you your answer.
Can you tell what exactly ISIS does so you say they are not Muslims?

it doesn't make much sense.. but there is the fact that he killed two terrorists before reporting it back to his base,, he might have snatched a grenade from one of them.. the report also says that he was heavily wounded..it might mean that he went into hand to hand combat with at least one of the terrorists..this is the only possibility I can see.. because a pilot never knows where a missile will hit his plane.. so carrying a grenade in flight might lower his chance of survival if hit near the cockpit.. If it is a suicidal mission in enemy's territory, then there is no need for an ejection seat in the first place..

NO one died from his grenade (except him ofc)... and no he didn't snatched anything..; since he did it WHEN SEEING them coming..;after a gun fight...

No need to add "Your Facts" that even ModRussia didn't even spoke about...
