Vice Admiral Joshi to be next Naval Chief
Vice Admiral Devendra Kumar Joshi, presently Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) Western Naval Command, will be the next chief of the Indian Navy. He will succeed Admiral Nirmal Verma who retires on August 31.
Commissioned in the executive branch of the Indian Navy in 1974, he has served in a variety of command, staff and instructional appointments. Vice Admiral Joshis sea command includes guided missile corvette INS Kuthar, guided missile destroyer INS Ranvir and the aircraft carrier INS Viraat, an official release of the Defence Ministry said here on Tuesday.
Vice Admiral Joshi, 58, will take over reins of the Indian Navy at a time when it is all set to get INS Vikramaditya, the second aircraft carrier, and induct other warships, long range surveillance aircraft and submarines. He will have a three-year tenure.
A highly decorated officer, Vice Admiral Joshi has served as the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, Commander-in-Chief of Andaman and Nicobar Island command and the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee. He also served as Defence Advisor in the Indian High Commission in Singapore from 1996 to 1999.
A graduate of the Naval War College, USA, he is an alumnus of the College of Naval Warfare, Mumbai and the prestigious National Defence College here.
