A study by academics at the University of Oxford found that vegans have more than double the risk of suffering a broken hip than meat eaters, with the affliction common in older people, especially women.

A study of more than 50,000 British people tracked over two decades found giving up animal flesh weakens bones - and can trigger osteoporosis.

Compared with people who ate meat and fish, scientists found that those with lower calcium and protein intake were especially prone to hip, leg and spine fractures.

Vegans were also 43 per cent more likely to suffer a fracture anywhere. In particular this applied to the leg, vertebrae and collarbone.

The latest research by the Vegan Society says there are now 600,000 vegans in Britain.

Study lead author Dr Tammy Tong, an Oxford University nutritional epidemiologist, said: "The biggest differences were for hip fractures, where the risk in vegans was 2.3 times higher than in people who ate meat - equivalent to 15 more cases per 1,000 people over 10 years."
Women are most vulnerable because their bones naturally lose strength after the menopause as levels of oestrogen drop.

Famous celebrity vegans include Natalie Portman, Ellie Goulding, Pamela Anderson, Sir Paul McCartney and Joaquin Phoenix.

The most comprehensive analysis of its kind was based on participants of the EPIC-Oxford study who were recruited between 1993 and 2001 - around three quarters of whom are women.

Around 29,400 ate meat, nearly 17,500 were vegetarians or vegans and just over 8,000 were fish eating pescatarians.

Dr Tong said: "We found vegans had a higher risk of total fractures which resulted in close to 20 more cases per 1000 people over a 10-year period compared to people who ate meat."

Participants' diets were assessed initially, and then again in 2010. They were followed up until 2016, for 18 years on average, for the occurrence of fractures.

Fracture risk was partly reduced once BMI (body mass index) and dietary calcium and protein consumption had been taken into account.
This is associated with a higher risk of hip fractures, and low intakes of calcium and protein have both been linked to poorer bone health."

Possible explanations include the cushioning against impact force during a fall, enhanced oestrogen production with increased adiposity or stronger bones from greater weight-bearing.

Dr Tong said: "This study showed vegans, who on average had lower BMI as well as lower intakes of calcium and protein than meat eaters, had higher risks of fractures at several sites.

"Well-balanced and predominantly plant-based diets can result in improved nutrient levels and have been linked to lower risks of diseases including heart disease and diabetes.

"Individuals should take into account the benefits and risks of their diet, and ensure they have adequate levels of calcium and protein and also maintain a healthy BMI, that is, neither under nor overweight."

Lassi, curd, buttermilk, yogurt....all these things are fermented. They are fermented so those without the enzyme (lactase) to digest milk sugars (lactose) can digest it.
Some people in Africa and South America eat apes and monkeys, "bush meat". So close to cannibalism.

You don't need to eat meat to keep your bones or body healthy. Animal products are not meat only. Eggs, Milk etc are animal products which are good for your bones and your muscles.

More than 90% of universities and biomedical research institutions in Japan hold memorial services for experimental animals or experimental organisms every year. Usually, biology is taken to attempt objective description of life, and tries to exclude ambiguous expressions as much as possible. But memorial services held in scientific institutions show that such intersubjective and emotional experience is formally organized repetitively in the hall of science. Officially it is supposed to be for educational and ethical purposes for the use of sacrificed animals. But historically it is also as an extension of Japanese tradition of memorial services for non-human species. For example, we can easily see many old stone monuments for horses, fish, and many other organisms all over Japan. There is even a monument for snails which were vectors for serious parasitic infection. By 1983 the snails were eradicated in the southern part of Japan. In the monument it is written that “We hereby commemorate the Miyairi snails that have been made artificially eradicated in the area of the Chikugo river, for the sake of protection of our human society.” Here we can see the deep compassion of the eradicators even for the eradicated.


Commemoration of artificial cells as a thinking/artistic experiment

Our project is to bridge the gap between the two aspects, the biological and the intersubjective, of artificial cells by setting a memorial service and a monument deliberately. By doing so, it raises questions such as “what are death and lifeness of such synthesized cells” and “is artificial life worth commemorated?” We founded a stone monument to the “souls” of artificial cells/lives in Japan as an artistic project in Ibaraki Prefecture in 2016, and started annual memorial services. We also made a monument to innumerable microorganisms, as the area (Ibaraki Pref.) is rich in fermentation food culture. At the initial memorial service, we prepared a glass jar containing experimental tools which had been actually used for representative artificial cell/life studies at nine laboratories. One of the most ambitious questions related with synthetic biology is whether we can make a synthetic protocell in a test tube by combining biomolecules. Scientifically it is very exciting because it makes us to reconsider what life is, what cells are, what is boundary between life and non-living materials.

There are mainly two ways to synthesize artificial cells. One is a top-down or hacking approach. It is represented by the creation of artificial bacteria based on mail-ordered, or chemically synthesized genomic DNA performed by the C Venter Institute in US (2010-). What we think interesting is that, if you ask many biologists if this bacterium is alive, most of them would answer “yes, it is” But if you ask if this is ‘synthetic life’, it will be much more debatable, and many scientists would disagree with the idea. Meanwhile, there is another approach to creating protocells, which is based on the “scratch and build. What it does is to combine biochemical molecules for continuous regeneration of genetic, membrane, and protein compounds, etc. This time, many researchers would agree that it is “synthetic”. However, about its being “alive”, their answer would not be unanimous. It is probably because the question of “whether newly designed artificial protocell or a biochemical complex is alive” sounds somewhat emotional, with the implication of “what life is for you.”

Actually, life can be considered with at least two aspects: One is a biological object, being described as a biological complex or organism. The other is life as an intersubjective presence, which is perceived to an observer as a more emotional object or relationship as “life with us”, which is exemplified by the state of funerals and commemorations, for example. We are interested in the ambiguous border and complicated relationship between the two aspects, that is biological and intersubjective and/or even ontological. They are tightly interlocked and form complicated boundary. Obviously, aesthetics or art is a good platform to explore such topics. We guess one reason is due to intrinsic similarity between life and arts.

But for most people they need some meat in their life for both nutrition and satisfaction. I personally think east Asian cuisine is healthy. There is some meat or fish in every meal or at least their sauce with plenty of vegetables and moderate carbs like rice.

Vegan is Chinese core civilization (from start 2 million BC to Liang Dynasty) and genetics, nothing to do with West!

What did Ancient Chinese soldiers eat?

Mostly grains. The most common being millet (pre-Qin and Han dynasties), since it has the longest shelf life compared to rice or wheat. Also, it was a stable crop in northern China, where most fighting took place between China and the nomadic invaders. Soldiers would boil the millet into congee, then add a source of salt (salt crystal, fermented fish, fermented soybean paste, or pickled vegetable), and whatever vegetables they scavenged along the way. Salt was a precious commodity back then, and soldier’s rations would include both grains and salt.

When soldiers from southern China made up part of the army, rice became part of the diet, because southern Chinese weren’t used to eating millet.

Ming army had a type of instant rice made from cooked and dried rice, just add hot water and it’s ready.

Under most circumstances, meat was very rare. Cows were used in farming, and horses were part of the cavalry. If an army is well disciplined, its soldiers were forbidden from taking animals from the local farms, especially the cows. It was a crime punishable by death. Depending on where the army came from, dried fish or meat jerky might be part of the diet. Only the generals could expect meat at meal time.

Fresh vegetable and fruit were even more of a luxury than fresh meat and thus not normally included in the logistics.

Like meat, alcoholic beverages were considered a luxury rather than a necessity.

As Chinese people were avid tea drinkers, tea was the most important drink after water in the military.

South Korean Soldiers to Be Offered Vegan Food

The Defense Ministry will provide a vegan diet for young meat-averse men who enlist in the military beginning next year, according to a spokesman on Sunday.

The ministry decided to give consideration to the growing popularity of veganism and vegetarianism and to religiously based food restrictions among recruits from multicultural families.

"We're going to make a food program for vegetarian and Muslim soldiers as soon as we figure out how many of them we have," the spokesman said. "From February next year, we'll let recruits identify if they're vegetarian when they fill in a personal questionnaire."

But currently only two soldiers have so far reported food restrictions, one a vegetarian and one a Muslim.

Last week the ministry hosted a forum to gather opinions before it hammers out a plan for any vegetarian and Muslim troops. One participant proposed a salad bar for soldiers just like in the U.S. military.

Vegan, Feminism are WESTERN PERVERSIONS or want to cross Western civilization BOUNDARIES.

Hindu civilization faced this issue 1000's of years ago aka Buddhism - Pacifism, Jainism- Extreme Pacifism. Jain/Munis don't take fruits (only eats fallen) because it hurts the tree and not eat Onions, Garlics etc as we have to kill the plant to get them.
