SEA raises issue with Centre as threat looms over domestic refiners too

AHMEDABAD, AUGUST 24

High-transfat refined vegetable oils being imported “unchecked” through the land border with Bangladesh is seen creating health hazards in India and posing potential loss to domestic refiners.

After the Centre took prohibitory measures to curb cheap imports of refined vegetable oils from neighbouring countries by misusing SAFTA, there was a spurt in imports of refined veg oils — soybean oil and palm oil — by road. This, according to experts, encouraged adulteration of veg oils in the domestic market.

According to an estimate by the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA), every day, about 800-1,000 tonnes of RBD palmolein and refined soyabean oils are imported from Bangladesh in tanker lorries and in packaged form through the land borders of West Bengal and Assam.

“This cargo is being released by Customs on the basis of bond on the same day of arrival without being tested by the Port Health Officer (PHO). Edible oil tankers from Bangladesh are having high transfat of 4 to 5 per cent and being used for adulteration in the local markets. There is no checks of selling and marketing such imported refined oils in India and they could be serious hazardous to health too,” Atul Chaturvedi, President, SEA, stated in a letter to the secretaries of the Central Departments of Revenue, Commerce and Food and Public Distribution.

SEA has appealed to the Centre to check and regulate such imports from Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries under SAFTA by road. “Therefore request you to direct Customs and FSSAI Authorities at these land ports to take appropriate action to stop the import,” said Chaturvedi in the letter.

Districts with land borders on the opposite side from where the imports enter India include 24 Parganas, Mundu-Myanmar, Jalpaiguri, Maldaha, West Dinajpur, Nadia, Gaur, Shillong and Agartala, among others.

Earlier, the trade body had raised an alarm on duty-free import of veg oils through SAARC nations. This was at a time when the Centre had imposed heavy duties on imported edible oils to protect the interests of local refiners and farmers.

The importers exploited the SAFTA agreement, which allows duty-free imports of goods from the signatory countries on two grounds — either the commodity is native to the country or has 30 per cent value-addition.

How come BD oil is hazardous to the Indians when it is not so for the Bangladeshis? in reality, it is the oil produced by the Indians with their unclean hands are more hazardous to health than the BD goods.

The Indians are famous as miser throughout the world. They are shouting only because our high-quality oil has been preferred by the consumers over the domestic one and the big Indian producers are losing the battle.

What a pity!!!

All these hue and cry just for 800-1000 tonnes of oil each day that is exported mainly to Assam and surrounding region of West Bengal. These people are indeed a miser.

I now understand the chemistry of this hue and cry. The famous Marwari misers were milking the Assamese by charging exorbitant price from them telling about long-distance transport charge. Now, I am not sure, the BD products may be priced at half their rates in the market. So, they are protesting of a low-quality BD product.

This India is living by sucking our blood. It exports $5 billion and imports $0.5 billion. Now, it is worried about a mere 1000ton daily import of edible oil.

I am all stoked about more efficient transport mechanism (using containers and river routes etc.) between India and Bangladesh now. And no transshipment.

All NE India FMCG needs will be met from Bangladesh. Only natural.

But, what can BD do when India keeps on begging and crying to BD for the W-E transit of their goods that started during the time of President Zia? After all, BD has to deal with a mentally handicapped big boy named India.

However, BD should curtail the transit facility and follow a rule of a case by case.

By watching Bombay movies I thought India is a Paradise where everyone keeps on dancing with the tune of songs, and there is almost no garbage anywhere. I asked one of my friends about this. He answered that most of the films' outdoor shootings take place in Singapore and European countries. That is why no one finds garbage in the films.

But, how come the Indians are shouting at BD products when they live in the gutters without a trace of civilization? I wonder why India is not taking this invaluable garbage to the Mars they are planning to land. Indian Tantriks should also visit Mars to spread the benefits of drinking cow urine to the Extra Terrestrials (ET).

Sorry to break the progressing circlejerk.

Bangladesh has imposed a 'self-ban' on vegetable export to the European Union market encouraging local growers to correct them following Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), reports UNB.
The government has adopted the strategy to avert 'any possible ban' to be imposed by the EU from where Bangladesh has been receiving objections for the last few years over the quality of Bangladeshi vegetables and fruits.

"Those who are maintaining good agricultural practices won't face any problem. Many are reportedly exporting vegetables through producing fake Phytosanitary certificates. Such practices bring more harm than benefits," Commerce Secretary (in-charge) Subhashish Bose told the news agency.

Citing an example, he said, the export of betel leaf from Bangladesh remained banned to the EU market since last three years as the EU wants disease- and pest-free vegetables and fruits.

Are you a retard? Since when India, the garbage land of Asia, has become a member of the EU? You are talking nonsense here when you drink cow urine and live a very undesirable life. BD is certainly improving its quality for exporting to the EU. But, our products are still much better than the Indian products in term of safety. Do not misguide people by focusing on EU.

See post #11 sent by @Homo Sapiens to know more about the healthy foods you guys consume every day with pride. We are a country superior than India.
