NEW DELHI: Minister of State for External Affairs General(Retd) V K Singh got a hero’s welcome when he landed on Indian soil on Friday after supervising the successful evacuation of Indians and nationals from 41 countries from war-ravaged Yemen.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj gave us the responsibility and we undertook it, results are there to see,” he told reporters at IGI Airport on his return from Djibouti.
“There were many challenges. Conditions are such that it was difficult to rescue people, but it was our task,” he said.
On Thursday night, Sushma had declared that the evacuation process in Yemen was over, bringing an end to the 10-day saga which rescued 5,600 people from violence torn West Asian nation through air and sea.
The entire evacuation process has been a redemption for Singh, who had gone to Yemen under the shadow of a controversy over his presence at the Pakistan National Day function at Islambad’s High Commission here.
He had been hailed for going to Sana’a and even staying there overnight twice to see the reality of operating flights from Yemen.
Of course, he had also created more controversy, with his tweets lashing out at a news channel, which raised a sarcastic joke comparing the evacuation process to Pakistan National Day function.
The minister said the government was helping everybody irrespective of their nationality.
