A US destroyer sailed close to a string of islands claimed by China in the South China Sea on October 21, the Pentagon said, amid continued tensions in the contested waterway. The USS Decatur passed close to the Paracel Islands and "conducted this transit in a routine, lawful manner without ship escorts and without incident," Pentagon spokesman Commander Gary Ross said. A Chinese Weibo social media user published a satellite image allegedly showing U.S Navy aircraft carrier the USS Ronald Reagan surrounded by at least seven other, purportedly Chinese, warships on 24 September.

The image, which later spread to other social media platforms, also suggested that the USS Ronald Reagan was alone when it was allegedly surrounded northeast of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, although aircraft carriers are usually accompanied by other warships.

The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group is underway in the South China Sea. The Commander, Task Force (CTF) 70 held a change of command ceremony on Sept. 29 aboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76). Rear Adm. George M. Wikoff assumed command of CTF 70 from Rear Adm. Karl O. Thomas.

The Twitter post said the image was taken northeast of the Spratly Islands, a contested chain of islands over which China, Malaysia, Taiwan, the Philippines and Vietnam dispute sovereignty.

Spokeswoman for the US 7th Fleet refused to confirm whether the incident really took place, saying only that the carrier is “conducting routine operations”. A spokesperson for the Chinese Defence Ministry neither confirmed nor denied that the US warship had been surrounded, but noted when responding to a question about their publication that the USS Ronald Reagan was sent to the region to “flex muscles and escalate regional militarisation”.

“We are firmly opposed to that. We urge the US side to respect the security concerns of countries in the region and make positive contributions to the peace and stability in the South China Sea”, the spokesperson said.

USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) is a Nimitz-class, nuclear-powered supercarrier in the service of the United States Navy.

The US, sometimes in cooperation with its allies, has been sending warships on so-called freedom of navigation operations, claiming to be protecting vital maritime routes, currently controlled by China, despite several other regional states claiming sovereignty over various islands in the South China Sea.

Beijing has repeatedly slammed these American operations as “provocations” and cautioned Washington against escalating the situation in the region with its “reckless” actions.
US Carriers are in a battle group so doesn't make sense and pictures seem fake

It’ll be back sooner or later

I never said anything about India.

Again, if the USN and the PLAN/PLAAF get into it, USN will decimate you.

Just calling it like I see it.

I dont think so.

Chinese navy is to strong for US to decimate. She has more submarines than USN and they are big threat for carriers including to USS Ronald Reagen.

This is not to mention the supersonic cruise missiles (YJ12, YJ18) carried by 052D/C, 055, 054, etc. Not to mention DF-21, not to mention LARSM AKD-20 carried by H-6K.

Well if that’s the case what is China waiting for then? They should immediately pull the trigger.

There won’t be any retaliation.

Why should China start war with US?

Why should China start war with US?

Because it will be incredibly easy to beat the US. It will basically be a one-way war, with damage only happening to the US and its Armed Forces side.

Commander, Task Force 70 Holds Change of Command
By Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Codie L. Soule, Commander Task Force 70 Public Affairs | Oct. 1, 2019

SOUTH CHINA SEA – Commander, Task Force (CTF) 70 held a change of command ceremony, Sept. 29, in the hangar bay of America’s flagship, the forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76).

Rear Adm. George M. Wikoff assumed command of CTF 70, the U.S. Navy’s largest battle force, from Rear Adm. Karl O. Thomas.

Thomas led CTF 70 through various multinational exercises including Malabar, Keen Sword, Valiant Shield and Talisman Sabre. He worked closely with many U.S. allies, friends and partners in the Indo-Pacific region to increase the U.S. Navy’s interoperability with other nations.

"I’ve had the absolute privilege to work with and lead the greatest group of patriots our Navy and country has to offer, and you should be justifiably proud of the important role you play in our national defense strategy," said Thomas. "Your contributions and professionalism to our friends and allies has vastly enhanced peace and prosperity in the region, and built trust and increased interoperability with our partners."

Wikoff became the 75th commander of Battle Force 7th Fleet, after being the Assistant Director for Global Integration and Current Operations, J3, Joint Staff.

"I want to extend my most sincere thanks to Admiral Thomas for all of his great work over the past 14 months," said Wikoff. "His leadership has strengthened the lethality of our forward-deployed naval forces, and I look forward to continuing the culture of excellence he inspired within the strike group."

Wikoff received his commission through the George Washington University NROTC program and earned a Master of Science in Operational Management from the University of Arkansas.

Thomas’ next assignment is as the Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Operations, Plans and Strategy in Washington.

Surprisely, commander of US 7th fleet is changed just after this incident on 25 sep 2019. And he is on helms for only 14months?

He made a rash decision to send a single CVN to provoke PLAN and after get chased out of the water? Maybe Trump is not happy with him and sack him?

The photo first came out from weibo from a Chinese user. Only these Vietnamese help to bring this new to English Twitter.

From a credible source. The confrontation ends in humiliating withdraw from USS Ronald reegan from the area. The commander himself believe to got the sacking by Trump.
Is that true?

The commander backed down because the carrier was surrounded by some chinese ships?
If true, he as a weak coward deserves to be fired on the spot.

We have a crisis in SC sea.

We don’t need cowards!

The easiness of a country to be beaten, is not a good reason to start war :)

There will be impact and collateral damage on both side that both need to consider before starting war.

.
What I see are gullible Chinese and their supporters who believes that somehow the fleet commander of the Reagan would allow his capital ship to be surrounded by Chinese ships.
