Five additional MD 530F Cayuse Warrior light attack helicopters arrived in Kabul on 17 June to boost the Afghan Air Force's (AAF's) capability to support Afghan National Army ground operations.

The latest delivery raises the number of such airframes provided by the United States to the AAF from 13 to 18. A further nine aircraft are scheduled for delivery by the end of August 2016, which would increase the number of the AAF's MD 530Fs to a pre-arranged total of 27.

"These five latest [MD 530Fs] have the capability to fire rockets or .50 calibre machine guns, and sighting systems that are not on the previously delivered helicopters," said Lieutenant Colonel Bill Ashford, commander of the US Air Force's (USAF's) 438th Air Expeditionary Advisory Squadron.

While earlier reports indicated that previously fielded MD 530Fs were equipped not only with FN Herstal 12.7 mm (.50 cal) heavy machine gun pods but also with seven-tube M260 launchers for 70 mm (2.75 inch) rockets, Lt Col Ashford said the newly arrived MD 530Fs are the first ones fitted with rockets.

Rocket-firing capabilities are set to be added to the previously delivered 13 MD 530Fs over the course of 2016, according to a report by the US Department of Defense.

There is sometimes some confusion regarding the exact number of MD 530Fs fielded with the AAF, as some of the helicopters already delivered were returned to the United States for weapon upgrades before being re-delivered to Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is not particularly happy with these helos. It seems low range and service ceiling are one of the major reasons.

Are they paying or getting free?

they need OV-10D

faster,more endurance, and more deadly.
They will need someone to fly those machines also

USA is bearing its cost. But what is the use of a machine if it doesn't fit for intended role?

Afghanistan is particularly happy with Russian MI-35.
Well money makes the mare go....If they can afford, they can buy from Agustawestland too. But I think it is okay for their needs, for internal operations.

So USD 20 mln for 36 is not that expensive but it is not a heli...cannot hover like a helicopter.

Actually,they should provide these...

Nothing suits better.
Why don't you sponser them...why should we waste our tax money on them.

$20 million each so $720 million, add another $200 million for weapons, spares, and training.

OV-10D doesn't need to hover when it can orbit which is just as good :D

The successful Hughes 500/MD 500 series began life in response to a U.S. Army requirement for a light observation helicopter (OH). Jst because the MD-500 series can carry a veriety of weapons, that does not make it an Attack Helicopter.

Low range, maybe. But it is a very small helicopter.
Low ceiling, not likely: the 530F is the hot and high version of the 500E, powered by an Allison 250-C30B rated at 650 shp (485 kW), certified in 1985.

The MD 530F® is engineered to meet your requirements for hot-day, high-altitude operation
