A three-year-old American child accidentally shot and killed his mother while playing with a gun in the suburbs of Chicago, police said Monday.

The tragedy, all too common in the United States, took place on Saturday evening in the parking lot of a supermarket in Dolton, a suburb of the Midwestern city.

The young boy was sitting in the child-seat in the back of a car, with his parents in the front. Without anyone knowing how, he managed to get his hands on his father's pistol.

The child "began playing with it inside the car. At some point the child pulled the trigger," local police chief Robert Collins told AFP.

His mother, Daejah Bennett, 22, was shot in the back of the neck. She was rushed to a Chicago hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The father was taken into custody while police investigated whether he possessed the gun legally and whether he should face charges, Collins said.

The death is just one in a staggering series of comparable accidents.

"Every year, hundreds of children in the United States gain access to unsecured, loaded guns in closets and nightstand drawers, in backpacks and purses, or just left out," and shoot off rounds accidentally, according to a recent report by Everytown For Gun Safety.

The organization, which campaigns for better supervision of firearms and in particular for requirements that they be stored securely, estimates that "unintentional shootings" by minors cause an average of 350 deaths each year.

More generally, firearms are used in approximately 40,000 deaths a year in the United States, including suicides, according to the Gun Violence Archive website.

This is America, they care more about how people treat dogs, less about how people treat people. Guns kill tens of thousands each year, but US government chooses not to do anything about it and let the killing continue year after year.

A trip to the supermarket turned fatal this weekend when a 3-year-old boy found a gun in the backseat of a vehicle, picked it up and accidentally shot his mother dead.

Dejah Bennet, 22, was pronounced dead at University of Chicago Medical Center at 9:34 p.m. Saturday, according to information from the Cook County medical examiner's office.

She was rushed to the hospital after emergency responders located her suffering from a gunshot wound in the parking lot of a supermarket in Dolton, officials said.

Gun Left Unattended, Boy's Father Taken into Custody

The shooting happened after Bennet and her son went grocery shopping. Soon after Bennet put the child in his car seat and sat down in the driver's seat, the toddler found the weapon that had been left unattended. The boy discharged the firearm and the bullet struck Bennet's upper body, killing her.

Authorities said the boy's father was in custody after indicating that he owned the gun. As on Monday, no charges had been filed against him.

The tragedy is all too common...

What a shocking statement!

So this is the country the so-called world police, world hero, who feel holy enough to accuse other countries as wrong?

If it's not extreme selfishness, then what is it?

Extreme evilness.

So, the way it allows three years old child to accidentally shoot his mom, the trauma will be HUGE and will haunt him for the rest of his life.

Oh, and the politicians just give lip service.

The same politicians who are allowing this happened and the same politicians who think they have the right to rule the world and especially you.

Such a world tragedy!

A loaded gun In the back seat of a car……Good Lord.
That poor boy knowing nothing of what he was doing and what happened. The father owned the gun did he have a carry permit, as no charges have been filed?

Right, instead of criticizing gun culture we definitely should get into the minutiae of what type of gun it was.
You need a gun to protect yourself. What do you do if an armed criminal breaks into your house? Such irresponsible parents would likely not hesitate to leave the kid with drugs, knives, etc.
