US will deliver 8 advanced F-16 fighter aircraft to Egypt | Zee News

Cairo: The US will deliver eight F-16 fighter aircraft to Egypt as part of America's USD 1.3 billion commitment to upgrade its security and military to back the key Arab nation's efforts to combat terrorism.

The eight fighter jets will be immediately integrated into the Egyptian Air Force, joining its existing fleet of US-made F-16 aircraft.

"The F-16s provide a valuable capability that is needed during these times of regional instability. America's commitment to a strong relationship with Egypt is demonstrated by continued cooperation and capability sharing between our two countries," said US Embassy Senior Defense Official in Cairo Major General Charles Hooper.

The US' USD 1.3 billion commitment this year to upgrading Egypt's security and military strength is especially critical in light of Egypt's intense efforts to confront terrorism.

"Extremists threaten regional security and these weapon systems provide a new tool to help Egypt fight terrorism," Hooper added.

The F-16 Block 52 delivery, to be effected today and tomorrow, is the latest concrete step taken by the US government in support of a friendship and strategic partnership with Egypt that has continued for over 30 years.

The US will deliver four more F-16s to Egypt this fall. In addition, it will continue providing follow-on support, maintenance and training for Egyptian Air Force pilots and ground crews.

Earlier this month, Egypt took delivery of three Rafale fighter jets from France, the first of 24 warplane sold in a 5.2 billion euro (USD 5.6 billion) deal earlier this year.

Considering recent events, I thought Egypt would rather have more ground combat assets like gunships and helos instead of multirole jets.

Reportedly the large scale deals with Russia included attack helicopters (what type is still unknown/unconfirmed) and transport helicopters.

The 45 Apaches the EAF operates are still enough to combat terrorism in the Sinai or elsewhere IIRC only two AH-64 Squadrons are actually on operations while the rest continue their training programs.

Simplest answer is we don't know. MBDA hasn't confirmed or denied any Egyptian procurements but several reputable sources include the Meteor in the Egyptian deal.

Egypt: the contract confirmed Rafale

The Elysee has just announced "The Rafale fighter won his first export contract . The signing will take place on February 16 in Cairo. I asked the defense minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, of sign on behalf of France " , said the head of state.

Dassault won the team's first export contract for its fighter jet, at 24 copies. Great news for the French fighter as well as for the defense budget! For military planning law (LPM) is based on assumptions of the Rafale export to lighten his order and thus smooth the financial burden of the program.

If the conditions of the contract are not yet fully known, the first three aircraft will be removed from the production line to the French army. So the first 3 Rafale products early this year will go directly to Cairo, reports a good source. Still, it will take some work to adapt "défrancisation" to bring them to the Egyptian standard.

This means that the Egyptian Rafale will be virtually the French standards.

Side arms, according to a close case, the demand of Cairo is about "French Suite" or Scalp cruise missiles, air to air missiles Meteor MBDA and Sagem 2ASM propelled bombs.

If Egypt has French Mirage fleet, Cairo is traditionally an American client. Still, Cairo has decided to diversify its arms purchases following the decsion of the US administration to limit its arms supplies with the arrival of Morsi government. While Paris is at the forefront in the fight against terrorism in the region including the Operation Barkhane.

Egypte: le contrat Rafale confirmé - Air&Cosmos

Two months ago, the Rafale succeeded at firing Meteor’s missile, manufactured by MBDA.

The Meteor, showcased on MBDA’s static and equipped on Rafale’s fighter at Paris Air show, is longer than 3 meters with a diameter of 0.178 meter, and has an operational range higher than 100 km. The missile can be launched from different platforms such as the Rafale, Typhoon, Gripen or even F-35 fighters.

MBDA’s Meteor is the next generation Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM) system designed to revolutionise air-to-air combat in the 21stCentury.

Guided by an advanced active radar seeker, Meteor provides all weather capability to engage a wide variety of targets from agile fast jets to small UAVs and cruise missiles. It is designed to meet the most stringent of requirements and is capable of operating in the most severe environments.

According to MBDA, the weapon is also equipped with a data link communication. Aimed at meeting the needs of a network centric environment, Meteor can be operated using third party data, enabling the pilot to have the most flexible weapon system.

Meteor’s stunning performance is achieved through its unique ramjet propulsion system - solid fuel, variable flow, ducted rocket. This ‘ramjet’ motor provides the missile with thrust all the way to target intercept, providing the largest No-Escape Zone of any air-to-air missile system. To ensure total target destruction, the missile is equipped with both impact and proximity fuses and a fragmentation warhead that detonates onimpact or at the optimum point of intercept to maximise lethality.

In May 2015, after buying 24 Rafales, Qatar decided to order 160 missiles Meteor for its future aircrafts as well as Egypt, that bought a large batch of those missiles in the framework of the Rafale’s contract.

In addition, Sagem has confirmed during Paris Air Show, the export of AASM missiles, a Precision-Guided Munitions, for Egypt. Deliveries are scheduled at the end of 2016. This missile will complete the armament of Egyptian’s aircrafts and will provide, with its large operational range, an important advantage to hit moving targets with an impressive precision for all weather, day and night.

Is EAF getting BVRs with its RAFALEs?

Well, currently Egypt has 2 types of MICA missiles with the Rafale, one with a 80KM range (MICA EM Active Radar Homing Missile) and the MICA IR with 60KM range.

The MICA EM Active Radar Homing Missile is the best fire and forget missile in the world, better than AIM-120 or R-77 or any other ARH missile around.

The MICA has a no escape zone of 60 KM (the MICA EM activates it's own seeker when it's 60KM away from the target) but the AIM-120 and R-77 only becomes real "fire and forget" missiles when they're 20-25 km away from the target they activate their own seeker and track the target, but the MICA does that from 60KM away and the Rafale pilot can break away when he fires the MICA at the target within a 60 KM range, which gives the Rafale a better advantage on it's enemy and makes it easy for the Rafale pilot to avoid getting shot because he won't have to keep a radar lock on the target at 60km range, which is a very long distance for a fire and forget type of missile.

More Money + technology + US help and funding = advanced technology.
Not to mention US refusing to sell us the AMRAAMs
US will always make sure Israel is few steps ahead of us.

I just want to say something, Egypt actually produce air-air missiles locally, Egypt produces the AIM-9 Sidewinder missile under license since the 90's.
