WASHINGTON -- The arrival of an American aircraft carrier in the Philippines symbolizes heightened U.S. involvement in Asia as President Donald Trump steps up efforts to push back against China's rise.

A carrier strike group led by the USS Carl Vinson docked at Manila in what is believed to be the first arrival by an American aircraft carrier in the Philippines since Chinese efforts to build military outposts in the South China Sea came to light. The last known visit by a U.S. aircraft carrier to the Southeast Asian country was in 2014 by the USS George Washington.

The Carl Vinson is expected to be anchored at the Philippine capital for several days. It is scheduled to visit central Vietnam's Danang in March. This would mark the first arrival of such an American vessel since 1975, the final year of the Vietnam War. Both Southeast Asian countries have territorial disputes with China.

The U.S. has conducted freedom-of-navigation operations in the South China Sea to check Beijing's activities in disputed waters, sending warships to sail within 12 nautical miles of Chinese-built artificial islands. In one such sail-by, the U.S. sent a destroyer in mid-January to the waters near Scarborough Shoal, which is claimed by China and the Philippines.

The Carl Vinson's current tour of the area is unrelated to freedom-of-navigation operations, according to a spokesperson. But the mere presence of a carrier with 72 aircraft aboard is clearly meant to send a signal against Chinese naval encroachment.

The U.S. will face the challenges of revisionist powers China and Russia by maintaining its overwhelming military superiority, the Trump administration declared in its national security strategy this past December.

The aircraft carrier's visit to the region is apparently aimed at sending a signal against Chinese naval encroachment, as it marks the first material action since the strategy came out.

The American move against China has been spearheaded by Defense Secretary James Mattis, who is said to be increasingly concerned about the Asian giant's rise. Mattis, who spent more than four decades in the Marines, is reported to be a strong voice inside the Department of Defense calling attention to the need to move some personnel now fighting terrorism in the Middle East to Asia.

The Pentagon is considering plans to send heavily armed Marine Corps Expeditionary Units to East Asia by repositioning some troops deployed in the Middle East, The Wall Street Journal reported this month.

As the Trump administration ups the ante against China on both the economic and security fronts, the military will likely exert a stronger influence over the Asia-Pacific region's future than under President Barack Obama.

Aren't you tired of posting the same warning for the last FIVE years?

These pointless warnings started in the Obama Administration.

Nothing ever comes from these Freedom of Navigation Patrols.

"August 15, 2013– USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG-54) patrols the Philippines Sea.[4]

May 21, 2015– US P-8A Poseidon conducts an overflight of Fiery Cross Reef.[5]

October 27, 2015– USS Lassen (DDG-82) transits within 12 nautical miles of Subi Reef and Mischief Reef.[6]

January 30, 2016– USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG-54) transits within 12 nautical miles of Triton Island in the Paracel Islands.[7]

May 10, 2016– USS William P. Lawrence (DDG-110) transits within 12 nautical miles of Fiery Cross Reef in the Spratly Islands.[8]

October 21, 2016– USS Decatur (DDG-73) transits near Triton Island and Woody Island in the Paracel Islands.[9] Although this was not within the 12 nautical mile boundaries of each island, it did contest the excessive baseline claims by China.[10]

January 20, 2017– Formal end of Barack Obama's presidency with inauguration of President Donald Trump"

Not at all....this just confirms that the US military conducts regular routine operations in China's near abroad. We can clearly see how well China's intention to push the US out of the region is going.

The FONOPs occur on a regular basis.

Why is it news?

We all know that the US disagrees with China's Nine-Dash-Line claim.

Are you going to keep posting every FONOP for the next FIVE years?

It happens on a regular basis. It's not news. It's standard practice.
----------

China's intention to push the US out of Asia is proceeding smoothly.

More heavily militarized reclaimed islands.

More advanced warships and submarines being built.

More J-20 and Su-35 patrols of the South China Sea.

Smoothly Marty? The US military conducts operations from Japan all the way south to Australia on a daily basis. It continues to introduce advanced capabilities to the region and will do so in the future. China's "US disengagement" strategy has proven to have minimal effect to date.

It will be stupid for China to declare it intention to push US out of the region but with Chinese military buildup either in SCS or our conventional force, US can sense the great pressure from China more then ever, it's not without reason that US want to divert 60% of their force toward Asia. As I said on other thread Chinese defense budget (150 billions) is virtually parity to US defense budge (670 billions) if you take into consideration of value engineering perspective: to perform a same tast (function) such as welding or assemble an aircraft, Chinese labor cost six time less than American counterpart. Hence this 150 billions is a great deal for China to acquire advance military. China probably can't have an arm race with US for global domination but certainly can afford to race against US on Asia theater.

When China force can withstand 60% of US force in Asia, the logical conclusion is that US will be meaningless in this region regardless if we push US out of the region or not.

This article is a slap on those neocon , warmonger.

U dont know why US warships keep patrolling ?? Then u'd better go back to Mar.

VN and US start drilling oil in nine dash line (block 118 blue whale project). US warships r there to make sure that PLAN only can sit and watch VN-US sucking dry all oil in SCS ( east VN sea).

USS Stethem patrolled around Triton isls while VN-US drilling oil in block 118 Blue whale (lô 118 Cá Voi Xanh in picture)project in 2017 .

U.S. Vows to Stop Beijing Taking Over South China Sea Islands
January 24, 2017

The new U.S. administration of President Donald Trump vowed on Monday that the United States would prevent China from taking over territory in international waters in the South China Sea..

“The U.S. is going to make sure that we protect our interests there,” Spicer said when asked if Trump agreed with comments by his secretary of state nominee, Rex Tillerson, on Jan. 11 that China should not be allowed access to islands it has built in the contested South China Sea.

“It’s a question of if those islands are in fact in international waters and not part of China proper, then yeah, we’re going to make sure that we defend international territories from being taken over by one country,” he said.

Marty has no problems posting the same thing over and over again -- how China is taking over the SCS. But now he is pissed that someone is posting news about US resistance to that claim. He has no controls over what people post and that gets on his nerves.

Its not US resistance. Its an attack tactic co operating with VN to suck all oil in nine dash line and also a way secure free navigation there.

1 stone kill 2 birds when US warship patrolling in SCS ( east VN sea)

What if you anger the dragon too much? There are too many US soldiers in harms way. It could also put the world economy into a tail spin leading to a disaster for millions around the world including US workers and businesses.

Without begging help from JP-US in 1978, The "Dragon" was just a country of 500 hungry peasants starving in every winter .

Thats why when US told CN to sanction N.Korea, CN dare not say No.
