US wants India, Burma to share good relationship

Washington, Sept 26:

The United States wants India and Burma to share a good relationship for furthering their economic interests, a top Obama Administration official has said.

“We want a good relationship between Burma and India and Burma and its other Asian interlocutors. It sits at an important crossroads. It will continue to play a vital role,” Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell said in his address to a Washington-based think tank.

Campbell’s remarks came a day after a top State Department official said India and the US need to look for economic partnership with Burma.

“The development of trade and transit links between Southeast and East Asia has been hindered for decades by poor regional infrastructure connectivity, isolation of the Burmese Government, and political mistrust between India and its neighbours,” Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy and Environment Robert Hormats had said in his address to the India Investment Forum in New York on Monday.

“However, Burma’s recent political and economic reforms along with continuing efforts by India and Bangladesh to improve bilateral relations have generated new opportunities to promote US and Indian business interests and regional economic development.

Given the vast potential, we should look to partner in this emerging region,” Hormats said.

They want an equitable, strong relationship on commercial grounds, they want to be respected and engaged appropriately politically and to work closely in diplomatic channels.

And I think we support that, and we think that is in the best interests of both countries,” Campbell said.

Have come around now, Haven't they? :)

We already have good ties with Burmese. If our government works a little more, we can take it to as friendly as we have ties with Vietnam.

Wasn't it the US & the West which had problems with India's closeness to Burma in the past? What US wants now.. has always been there for years.

Let me peek through the Curtain of this American Advice. And c whats behind the curtain

US telling us now which we are already doing. India know the importance of Burma both economic and strategic wise. And if things go as plan with trade corridor through Bangladesh, we can have a silk route.

To keep China away....

Burma and China are neighbors, why would anyone want to keep China away, The US support to Burmese democracy shift is based on the new silk road that traverses through Burma and reaches South East Asia and an offshoot goes into China.

You are a Chinese...ooops sorry....Copy Cat

It was the first word popped in my head.

J/K, no offense to Chinese posters.

P.S. Read post #7.

 I did not read your post bro. We posted at the same time I guess.

1. It's the old American game. Tying a rope around China. India-Burma-Thailand-Vietnam-Cambodia. Happily we BD are out of this mischief.

2. Never the less, Burma and India have too many problems that appear insoluble. Although Suu Kyi had spent her youth in Delhi, she will not be helpful in resolving issues like border alignments, cross border insurgent groups and many other vexing issues. Andaman - Nicobar is viewed by the Burmese as belonging to them, although it rightfully belongs to BD.

These days countries are claiming Islands and becoming greedy inspired by Chinese example.
BD was formed for Bengali muslims of India on what basis you are claiming Andaman and Nicobar.
BD has border problems with Burma, India has no problems with either BD or Burma. The genes which are found in the tribes of Andaman and Nicobar Islands are matching with Indian population.
