NEW DELHI: Staunchly supporting India's counter-terrorism efforts and strongly condemning terrorism emanating from anywhere in India, defense secretary Ashton Carter on Tuesday said the US too has suffered from terrorism emanating from Pakistan.

"We too have suffered from terrorism emanating from territory of Pakistan, most significantly in Afghanistan, and who do it should be brought to justice and brought to account," said Carter while addressing a joint press conference with defence minister Manohar Parrikar after holding bilateral talks.

Explaining the US relations with Pakistan, he said, "We have a relationship with Pakistan which we value and we also pursue it in our interest. We have no intention in conflict between India and Pakistan in anyway."
"Our relationship to Pakistan is principally directed to counter terrorism and that includes the things we do with the Pakistani military. Our principal interest is in working with Pakistan on terrorism and I think that's the concern India shares as well," he said.

Maintaining that the US overall policy towards India was completely different from the way it was decades ago, Carter said, "It is a thing of the past for us to think about India only in relation to Pakistan or Pakistan in only relation to India. That's the distant past."

"We have a different vision of India; if describing, one of the defining partnerships of the 21st century in which all sorts of things are going to be possible in the future as we share many interests," said Carter while dispelling apprehensions in India over the US offer to sell F-16 fighter aircraft to Pakistan.

"And one thing I could add is the more we work with Indian military on projects of the crime we discussed today, and technology to help protect our two societies from terrorism. The American position on terrorism affecting India is clear and unequivocal," he added.

He called Afghanistan Pakistan's territory :P nuf said

I'm pretty sure he didn't. The Times of India differs from other versions. I have now read about three different versions of Sec. Carter's remarks. You would think that one reporter could have given an accurate account of his words, but which one if they did?

As one example...

"We have also suffered from the terrorism rooted in Afghanistan and Pakistani," Carter said. "Washington wishes to maintain good relations with Islamabad, but is also concerned to reinforce and maintain good relationships with New Delhi," he continued."

Are you talking about this paragraph?

The brutal truth is many countries including US have suffered from terrorism incubated, directly, indirectly or carried through the Pakistani diaspora into the hearlands of the West. Not surprisingly those countries that host large numbers of citizens with roots to Pakistan have been impacted most. US and UK being prime examples.

People of Pakistani origin are most susceptible to becoming religious contractors for other peoples wars. This is most likely because of lack of clear defined identity and such that exists merely is expressed in religious terms and lacks depth. This malaise combined with geopolitics have made for lethal cocktail. That US and others were involved in preparing the coctail is fact but that does not dtract from primary responsibility of Pakistan to sort this mess out or to have taken measures to contain it earlier in history. Some of those afflicted have been:-

And then we have the daddy of them all. KSM who was the brains behind the 9/11 attack. There was joke going around post 9/11 that the operation was so well planned that it could simply not be Arabs behind the attack. Well they were right, sort of because indeed it took a Pakistani to plan the thing. We also have had issues in UK and almost every time it is a Pakistani or of Pakistani origin involved. London bombing was one such case. Bitter reality is Pakistan and people of Pakistani orgin where ever they are have a problem. No point in doing this (below).
