The new alliance, called ‘Sahel to South Asia’ is expected to be announced soon by the White House. -AFP/File
ISLAMABAD: The United States has taken Pakistan into confidence over a new US military alliance to fight the growing global presence of the self-styled Islamic State (IS), sources told DawnNews on Friday.

The new alliance, called ‘Sahel to South Asia’ is expected to be announced soon by the White House.

“Pakistan has been consulted by the US at the highest level,” according to a top government official.

Pakistan will take a formal decision after conducting consultations with all domestic stakeholders over joining the alliance, added the official.

“IS has presence in Afghanistan, and they maintain close collaboration with militant organisations, and if not tackled they can pose a threat to Pakistan’s security,” the government official further said.

More details are expected to be worked out through a high-level meeting between the military leadership of both countries, once the alliance is officially announced and made public by the US.

The development comes after US National Security Adviser (NSA) Susan Rice called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif at the General Headquarters (GHQ) last week, where she “appreciated and acknowledged Pakistan Army’s sincere efforts and sacrifices in the war against terrorism.”

During the meeting, matters of mutual interest – including the security situation in the region – were discussed.

Rice's visit was preceded by the visit of General Lloyd J. Austin, Commander US Central Command (Centcom) in which called on General Raheel Sharif at the GHQ in Rawalpindi.

General Lloyd Austin acknowledged the role played by the armed forces of Pakistan in fighting the menace of terrorism.

In February this year, the foreign office had broken its silence regarding the IS activities inside Pakistan, admitting that the radical Islamist group posed a "serious threat" to the country.

Earlier this year, leaflets calling for support for IS were seen in parts of Northwest Pakistan, while pro-IS slogans had also appeared on walls in several cities.

Security forces had also arrested a man in January, whom they believed was the commander of IS in the country involved in recruiting and sending fighters to Syria.

Intelligence sources, said the man, Yousaf al-Salafi, was arrested in Lahore and confessed during interrogation that he represented IS.

Rifts among the Taliban and disputes about the future of the insurgency have contributed to the rise of IS's popularity but security sources believe there are no operational links yet between IS and South Asia.

Disgruntled former Taliban commanders have formed the so-called Khorasan chapter — an umbrella IS group covering Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and other South Asian countries — in recent months but have not been involved in any fighting.

Their leader, Hafiz Saeed Khan Orakzai, a former Pakistani Taliban commander, appeared in a video address in February urging people in the region to join the group.

Led by Abubakar al-Baghdadi and based in Iraq and Syria, IS has taken over large swathes of territory in the two countries. It is accused of killing thousands of Muslims and some American and British citizens, including journalists and aid workers.

. . .
Whats the plan now , get Pakistan to go at war with ISIS and then pull the support out

Of course not, You'll be allied with Turkey, Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, Jordan, and maybe the Gulf Arabs (depending on whether they decided to change their pawns).

.
IS is coming to Pakistan you better get what you can.

TTP & LEJ are more radicals then this new ISIS phenomena, when Pakistan can control and ride on these groups what this Ba'ath Party - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia child can at best achieve here?....nothing!!

The strongest weapon in ISIS hand is only one....there abundant resource of finance, If Pakistan can control this single source IS will be dead before its born.

.
I have just read this news, whats going on? Suddenly so much trust, I can't believe it. Does anyone knows more about it? Or is it to destroy our wobbling economy and to divert our attention away from CPEC? lol

. . . . .
I believe Pakistan have enough on its plate at the moment and should focus on eliminating "anti-State" elements within its borders then to engage its resources elsewhere specially the middle east.

No need for our soldiers to be used as cannon fodder

We have no business in the Middle East

Our only concern should be that Daesh doesn't get a stronghold in Afghanistan

Remember how Afghanistan became the birth place of the global Islamist movement in the '80s and '90s? If ISIS isn't nipped in the bud right now, the entire Islamic world will be suffering the consequences of letting them operate for another decade or two.

  • hmm best support will be from diplomatic front from USA specially re India in easing of tensions.
  • other support will be support in Pakistani exports and relaxing restrictions on Pakistani exports.
  • joint military training courses and joint intelligence set-up will really help (sharing information as much as good odl times)
  • providing Drone support is very valuable. specially airborne surveillance and intelligence.
  • speeding up the delivery of already approved viper gunships will also help greatly.
I know that alliances are formed and broken according to national interests and blaming each other is waste of time specially no one does something for you no matter how close and how much you pay him for it if its not in its interest.. the Daesh case is different, it has direct consequences for Pakistan due to its proximity and also to USA due to its area of interest. hopefully the expectations will be realistic for each other and if both countries respect each other in terms of what is deliverable and what is not then there wont be the typical bickering of the past (or less of it).

lets see.

I'd rather Pakistan join "covertly". Get the goodies that come with the said alliance i.e. monies, weapons, diplomatic support. And avoid the uglies like a backlash from every retard with a beard and an AK-47 on this planet.

But yeah I have no doubt that IS will be the next big thing in Pakistan after TTP are eliminated from Pakistan and the good Taliban make it big in Afghanistan.

the Daesh case is different, it has direct consequences for Pakistan due to its proximity

Proximity to Pakistan? We are separated by thousands of miles of hostile Iran from Daesh's area of operations. The wannabe Khalifa lovers we hear about in Afghanistan and Pakistan do not have enough strength to pose any threat of that level, yet.

Daesh are opportunists.. and so are TTP and LeJ and if you see their media communications they have sworn alliances or offered support to each other from time to time
ASWJ which is the political face of LeJ .. conducts its Islamabad protests and marches from Red Mosque and the red mosque cleric has made no secret of his allegiance to Al Baghdadi..

in summary I am saying is,... if it suits them TTP factions and / or LeJ will declare itself to be part of Daesh / ISIS .. do note those wall markings inviting and welcoming Daesh in Pakistani cities.
one might choose to dismiss them as naive and stupid markings by toublesome and naughty youths but this is how TTP spread too.

yes dear, in case you missed, they have made their presence well known inside Afghanistan through back to back attacks on Kabul and Afghan taliban.

it just tells you how bad is ISIS that Americans in their discussions on tv are talking about supporting Afghan taliban.
. and many factions of TTP like Sajna have sworn alligiance to Al Baghdadi ... please update yourself
