LOL So that means Congis and all other major political parties of interest in India are sold out to US.

You only spy on those that don't give you access to inside information.

I am surprised that you got to know this only now.

Couldn't you judge by the crazed puppetry we saw during the last 10 years? :)

Nothing new or unusual.

Everyone keeps an eye on potential leaders & opposition in areas where they have interests.

Its a result of this spying that the US has & the world has realised the fact that they cannot consider the world or Asia without an " I'.

BJP among six foreign parties authorised for NSA surveillance

India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party was included in a top-secret list of six non-U.S. political parties worldwide that the U.S. National Security Agency received official permission to covertly spy upon, according to the latest trove of data released to the media by Edward Snowden, former NSA contractor-turned fugitive whistleblower.

According to documents that Mr. Snowden published via the Washington Poston Monday, the U.S.’ shadowy Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court gave the NSA “broad leeway” in conducting surveillance upon not only these six political parties but also a list of 193 foreign governments – including India – and only four countries were off-limits under this programme.

The Post reported that Washington has long adhered to broad “no-spying arrangements” with only the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, a group known collectively with the U.S. the “Five Eyes.”

Yet the classified 2010 legal certification given to the NSA by the FISA court suggests the Agency received “a far more elastic authority than previously known,” one that reportedly allowed it to intercept through U.S. companies not just the communications of its overseas targets but any communications about those targets too.

The documents further revealed that the FISA court authorised the NSA to snoop on the Internet and telephone communications of the World Bank, United Nations, OPEC, and the European Union.

The other five political parties that the NSA had authority to spy upon were Amal of Lebanon, with links to Hezbollah; the Bolivarian Continental Coordinator of Venezuela, with links to FARC; the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood; the Egyptian National Salvation Front; and the Pakistan People’s Party.

In a comment to the Post Jameel Jaffer, Deputy Legal Director for the American Civil Liberties Union, said, “These documents show both the potential scope of the government’s surveillance activities and the exceedingly modest role the court plays in overseeing them.”

During my trips to USA, I realized that most of the educated Indians there supported BJP.

So by extension, people who sent money to BJP must be under watch as well?

Just wondering. No hard evidence though.

True. Now the way you can do it is by either having a mole inside or spy on communications. They don't have mole in the top BJP leadership. And thats the reason to spy. In congi party there must be a mole in the top leadership hence no need for surveillance.

Just look at the Other 5 parties and you will know what I mean. PPP is a big surprise though.

Well now we have the proof :enjoy:

Nothing new US even spy on their close allies and their own people.

BJP was never a US ally.

I don't think NaMo would allow that either.

my 2 cents.

Actually BJP during Vajpayee's time tried very hard to get close to USA. Jaswant Singh was his go to man. They worked very hard to build a strong relationship with US and Israel. As they felt it will help India.

Its the US which ignored BJP after 2004. US probably (in its assessment) didn't expected BJP to come to power esp after 2009 elections. This was compounded by the fact that Modi's entry was banned. This all lead to major alienation with the US within BJP.

I don't think BJP will feel the same about US (or may be after some years). The major thrust of Modi Govt will be Asia esp. Japan.

Why would anyone assume that signals communication is not being recorded and analyzed by a whole myriad of international intelligence agencies at this point?

If Al Queda can figure it out, certainly everyone else can too.

This new data center in the rural US is not for reading emails between teenage couples. Its a good read from a credible source if anyone is interested:

But “this is more than just a data center,” says one senior intelligence official who until recently was involved with the program. The mammoth Bluffdale center will have another important and far more secret role that until now has gone unrevealed. It is also critical, he says, for breaking codes. And code-breaking is crucial, because much of the data that the center will handle—financial information, stock transactions, business deals, foreign military and diplomatic secrets, legal documents, confidential personal communications—will be heavily encrypted. According to another top official also involved with the program, the NSA made an enormous breakthrough several years ago in its ability to cryptanalyze, or break, unfathomably complex encryption systems employed by not only governments around the world but also many average computer users in the US. The upshot, according to this official: “Everybody’s a target; everybody with communication is a target.”

I think everyone understands that this is happening. NSA has means to do it across the globe (which no other org has) so they are doing it.

The discussion here is more in context of Indian political parties and the need to spy specifically on BJP. It was a center to right pro US (compared to other Political Parties in India) party few years back. Now they have to spy on it means things are not that cozy. Also the fact that it is listed along with many arguably anti US organizations for spying is another interesting point.
