DHAKA: Two more opposition activists were killed in a new bout of political violence in Bangladesh Friday after the US voiced grave concern about the unrest and slammed a spate of “unconscionable” firebombings.

Police shot dead an Islamist protester from the Jamaat-e-Islami party and wounded two more after they threw a molotov cocktail at a police van in Rajshahi, northwest of Dhaka, after midnight Friday, local police chief Alamgir Hossain told AFP.

“Three police constables were injured in the clashes,” he added.

Another Jamaat supporter was killed in the western city of Jessore during a shootout with officers, police told reporters.

Rights groups say the shootouts are fake and are nothing but cold-blooded executions of opposition activists.

A total of 65 people have been killed in political violence in the last month, according to an AFP tally, as an opposition alliance tries to force the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Many of the victims have been travelling on trains or buses that have been firebombed by opposition activists as part of an ongoing transport blockade designed to bring the government to its knees.

The US State Department issued a statement late Thursday saying there could be “no justification” for such violence while also calling on the government to allow peaceful protests.

“The United States is gravely concerned by the ongoing unrest and violence in Bangladesh,” deputy state department spokesperson Marie Harf said in the statement.

“We deplore the unconscionable attacks including bus burnings, throwing incendiary devices, and train derailments that have killed and wounded innocent victims.

“There is simply no justification for such actions in a democratic Bangladesh,” she added, urging the government “to provide the necessary space for peaceful political activity”.

The unrest began when security forces confined main opposition leader Khaleda Zia to her offices after she threatened to lead a mass rally against Hasina’s government on January 5, the first anniversary of disputed polls.

A confined Zia then called for a nationwide blockade of roads, railways and waterways in an effort to topple Hasina’s government and pave the way for a new polls under a neutral government.

The blockade unleashed unprecedented violence with anti-government protesters targeting buses and trucks with petrol bombs.

The government has deployed thousands of security forces nationwide and arrested some 10,000 protesters as part of a crackdown on the unrest.

Thousands more demonstrators have gone into hiding and Zia has remained holed up in her office, after her internet, mobile phone and satellite television connections were cut. -AFP

I would rather see a civil war than see US involved, because if the US gets involved, terrorism doesn't seem to stop.

Right after getting freedom from pakistani oppression, US started to meddle in BD. Because BD decided to chose red socialist sphere. Right from the start USA involved CIA and ISI agents in BD and didnt give a chance for stable BD.

At a time CIA/ISI agent puppet zia killed our patriotic leader SM. But zia couldnt live long. Because if you ever work as ISI agent your end is imminent. Then the long dilemma of Ershad regime. When this western model democracy came to BD then these maniacs left BD for peace sometimes. Because with this democracy they can always control BD and BD will always maintain interests of USA. Democracy is actually the main enemy of BD. BD needs a Caliph or king.

And this king/Caliph is SHW. And under her leadership when BD on a supersonic boost to progress. This evil USA decided to interfere again. With its long trusted BNP and Jamaat. And surely to destroy BD like Iraq, this USA is using BNP Jamaat like they are using IS AQ.

Have some shame before writing such idiotic statement which even top BD supporters like Indians would dismiss,if 70% bengalis raise voice against Hasena then they are ISI agents.lol.visit some neurologist because Pakistan has nothing to do with external or internal shit of BD

Please, Mujib's sons were acting as if they own Bangladesh and that got them killed and Mujib in the process. A lot of Bangladeshis still believe that Zia was the best Bangladeshi PM we ever had.

Also right after BDs independence India started meddling into our affairs, they never wanted and still don't want a strong BD as it would cause problems for them and a strong BD, Pakistan and Sri Lanka means that India will be left isolated in the region.

Bangladesh has made absolutely no progress under Hasina and she has turned BD into an autocracy and an Indian satellite state. Corruption is getting worse and there has been absolutely no development project undertaken by the government (Padma bridge is the prime example).

I assume that you are either a Bangladeshi or Indian (came here for trolling) and if you are a Bangladeshi, you are just a pathetic one, hiding you identity (using 2 nations that aren't BD) and acting like a coward.

STFU kid. Go learn something then come on forum discussion. Everyone has stake in everything. We know what we have gone through. Nothing to do with brainless people. Everyday we are catching ISI agents in our country leave alone what happened in past. Stop poking your $hit about BD. Because they are our enemy who Pakistanis show sympathy of. As pakistanis are sympathetic to BNP Jamaat it means, BNP Jamaat are are our enemy and always stay in suspicion. Pakistanis killed 3 million bengalis and their stooges still killing Bangladeshis. ISI AQ IS JMB all originate from same place.
And go in the BD street shoting Im jamaati. Yahoo. And see the fun how much bangladeshis hate these people. 70% oakthu.

Govt is catching the ISI spies but it is letting the RAW spies roam freely around the country to distribute fake currencies, drugs and help train Chatra League terrorists to kidnap and kill opposition leader.

. .
You Bangladeshis seem to be cut from the same cloth as your Pakistani brothers. You blame everybody else but yourselves for your cr@p

. .
Bangladesh should politely ask US to treat its black people with more humanity....

Because with this democracy they can always control BD and BD will always maintain interests of USA. Democracy is actually the main enemy of BD. BD needs a Caliph or king.

The truth has finally come out of this indian rajakar. These indian rajakars are the real enemy of democracy. They cry for democracy when they are not in power but once in power they shamelessly practise fascism. Ei khankir puitder jonno ei desh dhongsho hoia gelo.

Hasina isn't Indian or is it that you are admitting that she is?

Who am I to know whether your PM Sheikh Hasina is Indian or not? Go and ask her yourself. Shame on you for not knowing the nationality of your PM in this day and age. I can safely assure you that our PM is Indian :D

.
India, stop interfering in our country. We don't want anything to do with India. Hasina should be given the option to leave the country or face a life term. She is allowing Hindu India to cause chaos. She should face a life term or death by execution.

Hasina should be torched alive. What a disgusting animal. She is handing over bit by bit our country to a Hindu one. She has caused the death of 100s of thousands of Bangladeshis in the last few years.

We should just build an iron-clad border around Bangladesh so no one can get in or out other than by plane.
