The USS Fitzgerald, a U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke class destroyer, collided with the shipping vessel ACX Crystal about 55 miles south of Yokosuka, Japan at 2:30AM local time. The Fitzgerald is badly damaged, with the starboard side of the ship's forward superstructure, right below its bridge and SPY-1 phased array radars, punched completely in. The ship is not moving under its own power and has been taking on water. It is unclear at this time if lives were lost or serious injuries occurred asa result on the mishap but that is likely to be the case.

The US Navy has requested support from the Japanese Coast Guard to assist the stricken ship. The condition of the Philippine flagged merchant vessel remains unknown at this time.

The Fitzgerald is forward-based in Japan and has been very active in region as of late, participating in large-scale exercises with two US aircraft carriers, a Japanese helicopter carrier and an array of other surface combatants near North Korean waters earlier in the month.

A major search operation is under way for seven missing US sailors after their ship collided with a merchant vessel off the coast of Japan.

Japanese and American planes, boats and helicopters have been deployed but have so far failed to find the missing crew.

A Philippine-registered container ship struck the USS Fitzgerald destroyer in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Three people aboard were medically evacuated by air, including the USS Fitzgerald's commanding officer.

The incident took place some 56 nautical miles (104km) south-west of the Japanese port city of Yokosuka, at about 02:30 local time on Saturday (17:30 GMT Friday).

The Navy ship's starboard side was heavily damaged in the collision, but the vessel later managed to slowly return to its base in Yokosuka, with the assistance of US navy tug boats.

What happened?
The collision occurred near Yokosuka, which is home to the US 7th Fleet that comprises up to 80 submarines and ships, including the USS Fitzgerald.

It is unclear where the 154-metre (505ft) guided missile destroyer ship was heading at the time.

Report is awaited whether the cargo was off course or the ship's crew was asleep !

That dent is pretty massive though !

such weak ship consider what will happen if missile strike it

Actually No.

Cargo ships have enormous momentum even at low cruising speeds.

A typical 40 foot container can normally hold about 25-30 tons of goods stuffed inside (maximum). A 'typical' medium size container ship (700' long) might carry about 1000 of those containers. So there you go....25,000 tons of cargo. Having said that, remember, that's NOT counting the weight of the ship itself nor all the fuel she carries. which can be considerable.

Judging by photos in post #1 US destroyer suffered more damage than the container ship. Unsafe and unprofessional US Navy is to blame for this collision.

Can you explain how it's the fault of US Navy for the collision and not the other way around?

Not blaming the USN.

With cruising momentum it takes forever for a container ship to adjust course. Even then 15+ miles to come to a halt.

Careers are going to end for a lot of officers and the container ship.

According to Maritime Record

http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais...mmsi:548789000/imo:9360611/vessel:ACX_CRYSTAL

the USS Fitzgerald is a 9,600 tons ship, ACX Crystal have an empty weight of 29,060 tons and fully loaded dead weight almost 40,000 tons, it was 3- 4 times weight than the USS Fitzgerald, the Fitzgerald is actually quite strong to survive a crash like that. The force of 20,000 tons (if the ACX Crystal is empty) at 10 second contact at 16.8 knots would mean 30 millions newton of force in case you don't know, it's equal to a ~0.3kt Nuclear Bomb. Which is greater than any missile power in the world (Bar nuclear missile)

Calculate the N/s here

And a hit like that and the ship is still under power itself is saying something..

It's amazing any smaller ship could survive a direct t-bone hit from a fully loaded container ship. That container ship is 730 feet (220 meters) long. The bow of the container was higher than the deck and hit the destroyer right in the superstructure.
