President Obama’s national security adviser met with Pakistan’s top military officer in a secret meeting in Persian Gulf last week to deliver ‘a tough message’ regarding the Haqqani network, reported The New York Times (NYT).
According to a senior administration official quoted in the report, it was safe to assume that the Haqqani network was discussed during the secret meeting and that the Pakistan Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani was stressed towards taking a direct action against the militant network.
Earlier, the US officials met with the leaders of Haqqani network in efforts to talk the militant organisation into ending the war in Afghanistan. According to the NYT report, both the meetings were an indication of “Obama administration’s complicated and seemingly contradictory policies in Afghanistan and Pakistan”, as well as the efforts of the US to rebuild its deteriorating relationship with Pakistan.
The report states that the US State Department is willing to designate the Haqqani network as a “Foreign Terrorist Organisation,” but some military commanders are holding back the decision fearing that it might “alienate the Haqqanis and drive them away from future talks.”
The US-Pakistan relationship strained after Admiral Mike Mullen, the former chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, accused Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of supporting the Haqqani network and for helping them carry out the attack on US embassy in Kabul on September 10. Pakistan’s top military officials and other leaders have met with US officials in several meeting following the accusations to assure them of Pakistan’s fight against the militants.
The recent allegations have become a major stumbling block in improving the relationship between the two countries which has been on a steady decline since the May 2 US raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

Would reserve comment on that. So far it could also mean someone from Pakistan pounced back. Lol what the heck am I saying :D

I think what this means is that "Its good to talk" to sort out the way forward. It does not matter who said what to whom, as long as the outcome is a workable solution for both sides. ;)

As we offered before the US speaks in so many voices, the DoD ion one and Foggy Bottom in another - this confusion and incoherent policy's effect is not directed primarily at Pakistan, but is a reflection of the struggle in US policy making circles.

so, does it mean that Kayani stood up, or did he make some makeway?

Any sign of ops in North Waziristan?

The NYT article is just more US propaganda sourced to unnamed officials ...

Didnt the same unnamed officials also mention the rift in Pentagon on Mullen's remarks.. That anonymous source seemed to have more takers than this one it seems :azn:

Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani issued a warning to Afghanistan to stop cross border activites in Pakistan, Express 24/7 on Thursday.
Kiyani asserted that no such activities will be tolerated and that Pakistan “possesses the capability to respond to any situation”.
Last month, Pakistan lodged a formal protest with the Afghan government over cross-border attacks emanating from Kunar and Nuristan against Pakistani check posts.
Kayani made this statement during his address at the Saudi joint military exercise program in Mangla.
Kiyani said the people of Pakistan and Saudia Arabia share a deep and strong friendship.
On the ongoing joint exercises Kiyani said the objective of the drill is to counter terrorism.
He said that military operations are not the ideal solution for every problem, and said that the global community is aware of this fact.

Military exercise
Pak-Saudi joint military exercises took place near Mangla today in an attempt to provide the opportunity to both troops to benefit from each others training experiences.
Army Chief Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani and the Saudi chief were also present to monitor the exercises.
During today’s session, both forces successfully attacked the dummy hideouts of the terrorists.
The drill is part of three week joint military exercise program which aims at sharing information through inclusive training.
This will also include collective training at unit and brigade level to observe drills and procedures in low intensity conflict operations.

Did they say anything new? What was the purpose of secret meeting? Whatever they have done with Pakistan is more than that "tough message".

So they accept their defeat? What happened to their slogan "US doesnt talk with terrorists, it just fights with them"??????????

That 'rift' has been corroborated by official statements from US officials ..

Next excuse, since you chose to ignore the substance of my comment that if Pakistan had indeed capitulated, a NW operation would be 'imminent'?

they are already bombing by drones.
So what was the 'tough message' about, if they are doing what they want to do already?
