The United States has restated that Pakistan would be held accountable if it does not make sincere efforts to curb terrorist fighting in Afghanistan.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday (October 23) made the comment as he welcomed long-delayed legislative elections in Afghanistan, saying the United States was "encouraged" by voter turnout, despite reports of widespread problems.
When asked about Islamabad's role, Pompeo said, "Our expectation is that Pakistan will not provide any safe harbour to terrorists on their western border."
"We couldn't have made that message any clearer," he said, adding, "Pakistan will be held to account if they don't achieve that, if they're not sincere in that effort."
"Everyone wants a reconciliation in Afghanistan and to achieve that, you can't have a safe harbor for Taliban, for Haqqani and for others inside of Pakistan," he further said.
Pompeo's statement has come in the wake of US President Donald Trump cutting $300 million in military aid to Pakistan last month. The decision was taken after years of US complaints that Islamabad had been nurturing ties with terrorists that target both Afghanistan and India.
Pakistan, in its defence, has always said it has paid a heavy price for internally fighting terrorists.
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had also clarified that the country would no longer indulge in any other country's fight, stressing that their alliance with US in the war on terror, attracted more terror than peace internally.
The Afghanistan government also has, time and again, slammed Pakistan, accusing it for exporting terrorists from Islamabad into Kabul.
