US deputy secretary of state Stephen Biegun has told the Indian government that Washington will be consulting it more on its neighbouring countries, as he takes a key step towards resetting ties with Bangladesh at a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday.

Biegun will be the first high-ranking US official in at least a decade to visit Dhaka. According to people familiar with the matter, Biegun, in his discussions with India’s foreign secretary Harsh Shringla, went over ways to strengthen the QUAD security dialogue, and sought India’s inputs on its neighborhood.

They discussed bilateral cooperation on trade, including the development of common standards, a framework for investments, and building supply chains; apart from steps to help the Indian subcontinent respond to the Covid-19 pandemic, and plans to distribute a vaccine when it is ready.
The people cited above said that Shringla also briefed his US counterpart on Bangladesh, and told him about the need for Washington to engage with the Muslim-majority country, which is rising economically under the current leadership.
Former US secretaries of state John Kerry and Hilary Clinton had shown their intention to visit Dhaka, but did not make the trip. For long, India has encouraged the US to engage with Bangladesh as under the leadership of Hasina, saying the country has taken a sharp turn away from a more radical approach under Khaleda Zia.

Experts point out that the unstated backdrop to this is also that China has made huge inroads into Bangladesh, with the latter buying more than 80% of its military hardware from Beijing, including artillery guns and ammunition. While India had offered $500 million as credit to Dhaka to buy military hardware during the then defence minister Manohar Parrikar’s visit in 2018, the defence cooperation between the two neighbours is still work in progress.

so he is telling to the India Govt first

is that what Bangladeshi really wanted ?

If the Americans are going to "consult" the Indians before they speak with Bangladesh, then this initiative is dead on arrival. Lack of respect for Bangladeshs soverenighty before talks start is comedy hour....

Indian news report bigging up Indian importance.... nothing really to see here

US will get nowhere....BD wont play ball and there is nothing much they can do.... BD is not that critical to US nor will they be that bothered to really keep BD in their camp.

Unlike few Bangladeshis here, who like to boast only, you got it right. I had mentioned in the other threads as well, US hyphenated relation with Bangladesh through india, this had started right around 2001 when so called "war on terror" started. Current awami league regime was in opposition and contributed to that transition by collaborating with india and US and was portraying Bangladesh as full of extremists. Fast forward 20 years, now awami league regime getting the stick end of its own doing. This is just brief background context how this US policy came about and role Awami league regime played.

In real term, US actually gained nothing but lost geo political space in Bangladesh. By pursuing same india hyphenated relation, US lost its position in entire South Asia. Look around in Nepal, in SriLanka, in Pakistan (little different) story repeated. Problem is, in Washington thinking indian market and influence could be a game changer. When in fact it is proven in last 20 years, that expectation is just sheer mistake and rendered in net loss. Neither Washington gained any significant economic benefits, nor india fully committed and active in Washington bidding in confronting China. Washington had not realized the loss fully and course correction is not easy or forthcoming anytime soon.

At present in economic and in geo political trajectory, Bangladesh actually has NOTHING to gain from US. Bangladesh relation with US had been purely transactional and should remain so. World in fact became multi polar - Bangladesh could stay away from being US geo political bidding horse and seek investment and technology and market access else where. This is actually blessing in disguise.

I hope Harsh Shringla properly informed his American boss that Bangladesh will not jump into this Indo-Pacific shit, will maintain cordial and multi faceted relationship with China.

If US wants to enhance its relationship with Bangladesh, then Bangladesh must take this opportunity to further develop its industrial, commercial and civic infrastructure, increase export, and beef up the defense capability.

Of course strong diplomacy will be required to negotiate terms and conditions because nothing will be free, and it will be attached with visible and invisible "strings".

This is US diplomacy. The action of consultation was just to boast India. India is tasked to engage China by US leadership. US (specially Trump) knows where Modi and his government stands.

US interest in Bangladesh is to counter Chinese presence in that country. Now it is up to Bangladesh diplomacy that how much gain the can achieve during US-Bangladesh dialogue.
