US report claims China shoots down its own satellite - People's Daily Online July 19, 2010

For the second time in three years, China has shot down one of its dysfunctional satellites with a missile, US-based Foreign Policy magazine reported in its latest issue.

The destruction of the satellite, which reportedly happened in January, shows China's defensive missile ability, the magazine said.

China's Ministry of National Defense has yet to comment on the report.

The reported firing took place at almost the same time as a successful missile interception test that China conducted on Jan 11.

The website of Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV said the anti-satellite missile test, if confirmed, is likely related to the missile interception test, which occurred at the peak of a dispute between Beijing and Washington on a massive US arms sales deal to Taiwan.

During the interception test, US agencies spotted two missiles launched from two locations from the Chinese mainland, colliding outside the atmosphere, a Pentagon spokesperson said.

China's Foreign Ministry then said the interception test was defensive in nature and was not targeting any country.

Many military scholars believe it was targeting the Patriot missile defense system that Taiwan was trying to buy from the US at that time.

China's first anti-satellite missile test was conducted successfully on Jan 11, 2007, destroying an abandoned Chinese satellite.

The Foreign Policy article did not reveal any other details of the move or any response from the US government.

Chinese military experts even warned that Washington appeared determined to surround China with US-build anti-missile systems.

However, Peng Guangqian, a Beijing-based military expert, said the newly reported anti-satellite missile test was not necessarily related to the US arms deal with Taiwan.

"It was a large test which needs time to prepare for," he said.

"If confirmed, I think it was a further step for China to improve its defensive ability in space."

Peng also said that China has long advocated the principle of a nonmilitary outer space, on which the US has long kept silent.

China has sent a clear message about its capabilities. Though shooting satellites with missle is nothing to boast about, it fall under millitrilization of space which i belive under an international treaty is not allowed. None the less, the Chinese have proven that such treaties would not worth their paper if an action is needed in their defence.

We hope to see a strong and prospering :china:

I am wondering if the second anti-satellite test did take place. If it indeed did, how come the second time around the Western press did not howl in self-righteous indignation?

no reality in this news,no one will believe on that news.....on doubt china is a strong country but not stronger like USA. USA is still 10 times stronger than China...

This thread is getting off-topic really fast, not that it matters. China insists it is the largest developing country for a very good reason --it is behind a developped country like the US. For our Indian members to point that out, we, as Chinese, are not going to be offended. We know it already. Take a long view and see what happens 20 or 30 years from now.

Its not difficult to guess when the name China is in a thread which side will derail it and then complain about further derailment of the thread from their opposite side.

"Nothing to boast about" - haha good one.

Only 3 countries posses that capability at the moment, so it is something to boast about.

The press, Western or otherwise, does not know of such things happening unless they are told. If the US or some other military/intelligence service chooses to keep the discovery of such events secret, there is no news to howl about. For all we know, the USA has conducted similar tests and either no one knew or no one wants to let on that they know. Telling the press what you know about such outer space tests may help the "other side" to understand what are your "detection" capabilities.

clearly the writer dose not know much about science and mistake China's mid-term anti-missile test as another anti-satellite test.

So is the 3rd country India or Russia. I can imaging Russia had developed this capability but I'm not aware of the tests. But at the same time, many Indian members claimed that India already had developed this capability but India just does not want to show its ability. So does India count as the 3rd country in this case as they claim to have this capability?

.
Of Course india is the 3rd country according to their people, politican and journalist.
