The U.S. military has begun preparations to sail a Navy warship into the Black Sea amid heightened tensions over Russia's seizure of Ukrainian ships and sailors.

The Pentagon has requested that the State Department inform Turkey of the possible action, CNN reported Wednesday, citing three anonymous officials.

The U.S. is required to notify Turkey under the terms of the 1936 Montreux Convention, which governs the movement of military ships through the strategic Bosphorus and Dardanelles waterways which connect the Mediterranean to the Black Sea.

The officials CNN spoke to said the plans to possibly sail a warship into the Black Sea are in response to Russia's actions.

Russia seized two Ukrainian navy ships and a navy tugboat along with 24 crew members off Crimea in late November, accusing the vessels of entering its waters and provoking a conflict.

It said the vessels had ignored calls to stop, sparking military action.

Russia intervened as the Ukrainian ships were relocating from the Black Sea port of Odessa to the port of Mariupol in the Sea of Azov.

The action has further strained ties between Moscow and Kiev.

Russia's Investigative Committee has accused the Ukrainians of illegal border crossing.

In a tit-for-tat, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has forbidden Russian male citizens aged 16 to 60 from entering the country.

Russia and Ukraine have been at loggerheads since 2014, when Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula following a controversial referendum.

The international community views the annexation as illegal and the election Russia uses to justify it as illegitimate.

i'm not surprised by this modest troop movement.

after courting the western-Ukranians for as long as NATO has, we have to show them we'll back them up to the extent that's practical.

but ehm, the east-Ukranians are probably truthfully siding with Moscow.
that's something the west-Ukranians had better just accept, even though they lose some territory by accepting it.
it avoids major tensions and even war, for the west-Ukranians to officially let the east-Ukranians start their own country, allied to Russia.

Russia will never give up it's naval base (older than a century by now) in the Crimea.
To ask them or expect them to do so is ridiculous.
They clearly also want a stretch of territory thoroughly allied to them, straight down from the Russian-Ukranian border to Crimea, rather than having to route everything around it.

It is highly unreasonable for NATO or west-Ukraine to try to push Russia out of the Crimea, or to make it jump through hoops to supply and operate that naval base of theirs in the Crimea.

i hope US commanders realize this too.

one relevant side-note : i'm against an ICBM intercept force in Eastern-Europe too. Trying to establish one there is only going to drive the Russian tigers into a corner. You don't do that to tigers. Place it in Greece instead, please.

Russia and China are acting in tandem in different regions. It's just not Ukraine and that is the threat the west must tackle before they spread their tentacles further. Russia and China are anti-democratic forces. If they have to they will prop up characters like MBS and MBZ and already there are signs that they are in good terms with the wahabi terror kingpins. Assad is definitely not the only despot they support.

Uh what would sailing in black sea achieve? Conflict is in sea of azov, russia has closed the strait that connects black sea as azov. If US sails into azov sea that would mean something otherwise its just hollow.
Besides US and Russia aint gonna get directly involved in conflict.

It was closed only for some hours. It is opened now, as usual.

And, some folks still play with the idea that Turkey won't get ATAK choppers delivered to Pak...
