Because

(1) the function/role of an american politician is to deceive the voters who listen to what they want to hear and project their imaginations, frustrations, and desires onto the theatrical figure charged with deceiving them

(2) the Duopoly offer is Pepsi or Coca-Cola (the voter cannot choose neither beer, nor wine nor mineral water) so the two brands are forced to exaggerate their rhetoric to levels of mass hysteria
