US Outraged With China’s Runaway Construction in South China Sea
23.08.2015

While China finishes the construction of a landing strip for humanitarian purposes on its artificial island in the Spratly Islands archipelago in the South China Sea, the US is fiercely accusing the country of militarization of the area.

Remember Those Tiny Islands The US Unilaterally Seized Over A Century Ago?

A 3,000-foot Chinese airstrip on one of seven man-crafted islands in the Spratly Islands that is in the final stage of construction may be used in the future for conducting military operations by China, authors of a recent Pentagon report claimed.

As soon as the runaway is built, China will use it for airplanes, which are now based on the country’s aircraft carriers in the South China Sea, the report reads.

So far, there is an only one Chinese carrier based in the South China Sea and it is not “fully operational,” according to First Post. It is an upgraded version of one of the USSR-era vessels that China bought from Ukraine. But, American experts believe that, by the end of 2020, a lot more carriers for the South China Sea will be constructed by the Chinese military.

Although the constructing of various facilities, including the runaway, on artificial islands is “within the scope of China's sovereignty," according to Chinese officials, Americans labeled it as “further reclamation of territories” by China in the South China Sea. Moreover, they accused China of a military build-up.

Zhu Haiquan, the Chinese embassy spokesperson in Washington, said in the response to the Pentagon report that those facilities on the islands would be essential for the “public good.” For instance, international rescuers would be able to use them for conducting disaster relief operations and for researching purposes.

“China stands ready to open these facilities to other countries upon completion,” Mr. Zhu stated. “We hope the US side will view this in an objective and balanced way and respect regional countries’ efforts to maintain the peace and stability of the South China Sea.”

Important trade routes lie within the South China Sea, making revenues worth $5 trillion annually. Such countries as the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, Brunei along with China currently claim parts of the sea.

"American outrage" very often tends to correlate with anything that improves China's geopolitical position. Or anything that is good for China at all.

Remember when they were raging at the AIIB and screaming at their allies, warning them not to join it?

Because providing more funds for infrastructure in the developing world is bad right?

US discomfort, discontent, rage and anger is a good yardstick to gauge our mistakes and successes. One one major international is so one-dimensional and ahistorical, it gets dangerous as well as easy to handle.

I would say it "often correlates".

But there are some times when it does not, and those are quite interesting. Sometimes it is due to genuine shared interests (like preventing anyone else from getting a UNSC permanent seat) and sometimes it's just mind games.

Apparently some elements of the American leadership still have a zero-sum Cold War mentality, which becomes very obvious when you consider the stance some of them have towards Russia.

I would never underestimate the reactionary nature of the US political establishment. I at times argue that the US is the most Salafist nation in the West. In the East, their equal would be KSA.

This Cold War mentality is very dangerous.

They could very possibly start a nuclear war with Russia, which means the end of the world for everyone.

We need vast underground cities in order to have a chance to survive that kind of thing.

It is SO beautiful to see that the US can only bark bark bark. With any other nation, they bite. But when it comes to China, the US is sitting on a greasy slide down, watching in tears at how China is going through a meteoric rise. And it can only bark and cry. Awhh.

How seriously should one take news from an English language source where the editorial staff isn't competent enough to differentiate between runway and runaway even when writing the subject matter in context.

If you re-read the title, it is correct.

The Americans are outraged with China's runaway construction in the South China Sea, one of which is the runway.

I have taken the liberty to correct some grammatically errors (see the RED text).

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
