New Boom Reshapes Oil World, Rocks North Dakota : NPR

Two years ago, America was importing about two thirds of its oil. Today, according to the Energy Information Administration, it imports less than half. And by 2017, investment bank Goldman Sachs predicts the US could be poised to pass Saudi Arabia and overtake Russia as the world's largest oil producer.

Amy Myers Jaffe of Rice University says in the next decade, new oil in the US, Canada and South America could change the center of gravity of the entire global energy supply.

"Some are now saying, in five or 10 years' time, we're a major oil-producing region, where our production is going up," she says.

The US, Jaffe says, could have 2 trillion barrels of oil waiting to be drilled. South America could hold another 2 trillion. And Canada? 2.4 trillion. That's compared to just 1.2 trillion in the Middle East and north Africa.

Jaffe says those new oil reserves, combined with growing turmoil in the Middle East, will "absolutely propel more and more investment into the energy resources in the Americas."

Russia is already feeling the growth of American energy, Jaffe says. As the U.S. produces more of its own natural gas, Europe is free to purchase liquefied natural gas the US is no longer buying.

"They're buying less natural gas from Russia," Jaffe says. "So Russia would only supply 10 percent of European natural gas demand by 2030. That means the Russians are no longer powerful."

Its like "i robbed my wealthy neighbors blind and now, my economic condition has boomed up"

awesome news..This will make sure that there is not too much dependence on Middle East

We do not need to completely sever our oil import, after all, buying from those who NEED to sell is often political leverage and help to keep domestic prices low. It will take time before we see any price decrease at the consumer level and getting rid of the socialist currently in office would speed up that price decrease.

Could you please educate me how you can arrive at that conclusion based on a story about the discovery of new supplies in North America? I am sure your mental agility to make that connection would be impressive indeed.

Gold medal quality. I gladly yield to these gents in this area.

USA has strategy to not touch its own oil reserves it keeps its own assets untouched , while it uses Saudi oil
US maintains a big supply for oil reserves trillion and trillion of oil barrels stored underground for use in war or emergency
When prices will go up US will still be able to use cheap oil

Don't the Saudis want the wealth that comes to them by selling their oil? They get the money they want, and the world gets the oil it needs.

Seems like a win-win to me. What is the problem in that?

(Please note the Saudi Arabia is only a minor supplier to the US.)

Well nothing wrong in storing oil (hoarding it)

Its basic business I hope Pakistan also saved up at least 4-5 months worth of supply for oil for our emergency usage

I sure hope so. Strategic oil reserves in Pakistan are known to be small, of the order of weeks instead of months.

Won't the situation be akin to "I am sitting at my home and noticed that i have a treasure chest buried in my own backyard"

Gambit,

Is this oil discovery from conventional fields or is it on continental shelf. Is shale oil included in it?

So the US has killed off all Mexicans and Canadians? I must have missed those news.

What people should realize is that oil is plentiful, but the cost of producing it varies greatly. The reason Middle East oil has been exploited first, much to the financial advantage of the Arabs is that it has the lowest cost per barrel produced. With newer technologies, the cost to produce from other sources is coming down, but is still not as low as Middle East oil.

So, more cost effective resources are used first.

Second thing to keep in mind is that there are different types of crude oil. Some, like Venezuelan oil, are heavy and sulfur rich, which means more costs for refining. Middle East oil is called "light sweet crude" for the reason it is easy to refine and has fewer contaminants.

So, the better quality resources are used first.

Therefore, none of this is some scheme on the part of the US to steal anyone's oil.

North Dakota is pretty much smack in the middle of continental US (CONUS) so we can rule out off shore oil.

New drilling technologies mean companies can extract oil and natural gas from shale rock that was previously thought unreachable.
Most of our import are already from the Western Hemisphere and some European sources. Even if US consumers do not see the benefit of lowered gas prices, the fact that the US will be far less dependent on ME sources means we will be far less accommodating to the fickleness of the backward regimes there. If what DoE said is true: That we went from 2/3 down to 1/2 of import in a few years, it mean soon we can use our willingness to buy as an even more effective geopolitical tool. Add domestic nuclear energy into the mix and we can send SA back to the 7th century toot-sweet without firing a shot.

Get rid of Obama and it is assured that the current 'US is going collapse soon' prediction/hope will added to the list of failed predictions. According to the Russians, we were supposed to collapse back in Jun of 2010.
