The United States has informed Ankara that it has removed Turkey from the F-35 Joint Attack Aircraft (JSF) program.

The Memorandum of Understanding, first signed by partner countries in 2006, was terminated for Turkey’s official withdrawal from the F-35 JSF program. The memorandum of understanding with 8 other partners of the F-35 JSF Program has been renewed. Relevant developments were reported to Ankara by the USA. Speaking to the Anadolu Agency, an official from the USA stated that new partners were not included in the agreement.

In February 2021, Turkey had reached an agreement with one of the most prestigious US law firms to return to the F-35 fighter jet program and deal the retain rights. Defense industry technologies (SSTEK), a subsidiary of the Department of Defense Industry (SSB), has agreed with Arnold & Porter, one of the most prestigious law firms in the United States, to re-enter the F-35 program.

Agreement between A&P and SSTEK ensure that covers the law consultancy services for the legal struggle of losses of rights, rather than remain in F-35 fighter jet program. SSB chief Demir stated last month that the strategic goal of the TR is the legal protection of industrial issues and monetary expenditures rather than returning to the program.

The United States and eight other countries have abolished the 2006 deal regarding the F-35 program and signed a new agreement that has excluded Turkey, Anadolu Agency (AA) cited a Pentagon official as saying late Wednesday.

Turkey is one of the main parts suppliers to the warplanes.

The official did not go into further detail regarding the move, according to AA.

Washington removed Turkey from the F-35 Lightning II jet program in 2019, arguing that S-400 air missile systems acquired by Turkey could be used by Russia to covertly obtain classified details on the Lockheed Martin F-35 jets and is incompatible with NATO systems.

Turkey, however, insists that the S-400 would not be integrated into NATO systems and would not pose a threat to the alliance.

Despite Turkey’s removal from the program and sanctions imposed on Turkey’s defense industry in December, the Pentagon has said it will continue to depend on Turkish contractors for key F-35 components.

A U.S. congressional watchdog warned in May 2020 that the U.S. decision to expel Turkey from the F-35 program is likely to compound its already beleaguered supply chain issues from a production increase. The $398 billion (TL 3 trillion) F-35 program has faced many problems since then, including engine shortages.

It was worst decision taken by Turkish high command.Turkey just has over played.
Taking US head on is worst startegy Turks have taken.

Looks like the parting of ways between Turkey and US over F-35. The only issue that needs to be settled is compensation for Turkey, who needs to get its investment in the program reimbursed.

Turkey has killed a #of birds with one S-400 stone:
  • Getting rid of the F-35 program, which is the Mother of all Ponzi schemes as per the Father of F-16s
  • Putting the entire NATO on hold vis-à-vis the Russia-China axis, for switching S-400 ON means the end of NATO's early missile warning capabilities, which are currently installed inside Turkey, for S-400 is an excellent "recorder" of electronic signatures and sharing them with its masters in the Kremlin! Currently, Turkey switches it OFF, so that NATO members can go to bed each night. Switching b/w ON/OFF is one click away
  • Studying S-400 to develop counter measures, correct loop-holes for indigenous long range radars, long range AD missiles etc.; thus, Turkey herself can expedite the development of her on-going very own long range fool-proof AD system programs
  • Etc.

.
Honestly this is more of a blessing in disguise.

Also lol at the US for electing the guy that started the 2016 Turkish coup

Turkey lost F-35 program, which if followed on would have provided major leap to Turkey in 5th tech.
Turkey is capable of developing a system compareable to S-400 but it is decade away from building a F-35 style system.

Bro in my opinion Turkey should go for s400 after taken first delivery of F35

Turkey is more than welcome to join the AMCA program. It will provide non-F-35 partners the best opportunity to invest in and reap from the development of a 5th generation fighter, the development of which is in full swing.

I can envision wealthy countries like Turkey, Gulf states, and Eastern Europe equipping their air forces with the 5th-generation AMCA as a more flexible but equally-capable alternative to the F-35.

You think US will really allow turkey to have F-35? This is just an excuse and I believe Turkish already sense it and is the main reason insist on S-400.

If they do not go for S-400. They will need up with nothing, no F-35 and no S400. Remember american are unreasonable. There is no rational to explain their action.

This time, I agree with your statement.

the F-35 like as a flying computer
and flying computer F-35s will be under American control

even Israeli Airforce can use F-35s against Turkey
but Turkish Airforce can not use F-35s against Israel

Turkish Airforce can not use F-35s with American permission

-- The MDL ( Mission data loads ) has to be loaded into the F-35’s onboard computer before each mission and has to be updated after each mission

-- All F-35s including those from partner countries must update their mission files and ALIS ( Autonomic Logistics Information System ) profiles before and after each flight

Only the US is currently capable of programming the MDL and ALIS for all F-35s

and 100 F-35A price+equipments+maintenance for 30 years = $40 billion

better to spend $40 billion for developing indigenous military projects

-- S-400 , HISAR-A , HISAR-O , SIPER , G-40 VL , KORKUT Air Defense Systems can protect Turkish Airspace from Cruise Missiles , Fighter Jets and strategic Bombers

-- 230+ F-16C/D Fighter Jets armed with AIM-120B and AIM-120C7 BVR air to air missiles to protect Turkish Airspace from Fighter Jets ..... ( and Aselsan AESA Radar is coming )

-- if needed , even TAI HURJET can carry 2 SOM Cruise Missiles to attack on military and strategic targets
in the region ( SOM will have range of 500km with Turkish KTJ3200 engine )

-- Turkey develops supersonic stealth UCAV to carry SOM Cruise Missile for SEAD and DEAD role

-- 280/1.000 km KHAN-BORA Ballistic Missiles to engage on military and strategic targets in the region

-- 800 km GEZGIN land/naval based Cruise Missiles to engage on military and strategic targets in the region

-- 250 km ATMACA anti ship Missile to hit Enemy Navies in Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean

-- Turkey develops TF-X 5th gen Fighter Jet for 2030

so without F-35 Turkish Armed Forces can survive

.
The US Senate and PENTAGON always will block transfer of F-35s to Turkiye , even if Turkiye cancel S400 deal

The problems between Turkey and the US are multilayered and very complicated
USA plays F-35 card against S-400 deal to ask Turkey for endless concessions

  • The US support of Gulenist/FETO terrorist organization and coup d'etat attempts for undermining Turkish democracy. F. Gulen must be extradited to Turkey.
  • The US support, training and arming of PKK/YPG organization against Turkey
  • The US support for Greek and Israeli oil/gas drilling in the East Med that violates the rights/EEZ of Turkey and TRNC must cease
  • currency manipulation by The US to try to weaken the Turkish economy

The S-400 just turned into a filter pushing other problems to the back burner

still you are talking about F-35 .. forget about American weapons ( in a war , without American permission Turkish F-35s even can not take off )

if no F35
then We should focus on long range Ballistic and Cruise Missiles ..... no need pilot , no need operation cost and no need maintenance but very big deterrence

We should prefer long range BORA and GEZGIN Missiles up to 800-1.000km instead of American control flying computer F-35s for deterrence in the region

and focus on MIUS UCAV and MMU Fighter Jet developing programs
