US offers latest airborne radar to India

After a range of top fighter aircraft and other weapon systems, the US has now offered another sophisticated system to India, the Airborne Stand-Off Radar (ASTOR), whose capability has been described as "unmatched" by a former US navy official.

According to Admiral Walter F Doran, president Asia for Raytheon, Indian officials had already been briefed on "this latest radar, for highly effective 24-hour surveillance and target acquisition capability", India Strategic magazine reported in its latest issue. The system is being operated now by the British Army and Royal Air Force (RAF) in Afghanistan with five ASTOR aircraft and eight ground stations.

Admiral Doran is quoted in the magazine as saying that Raytheon, a military technology giant, had also submitted a formal proposal to the Indian government. He declined to give details.

First deployed in 2008, ASTOR can even detect minor variations in surface levels, like digging and filling of earth at the same place, and draw conclusions about activity. The system consists of an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar on board the Bombardier Global Express 'Sentinel' business jet. Indian officials first visited the aircraft displayed at the Paris Air Show in June 2009 and have followed up with discussions.

Admiral Doran, a former US Navy 7th Fleet commander, said that "the capability on board the ASTOR was unmatched", pointing out that although Raytheon did not make platforms, its combat systems were on board most of the US aircraft, ships, spacecraft and land vehicles. For instance, the AESA radar on board the Boeing F 18 Super Hornet, F 15 Eagle and P8 Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft (for the US and Indian Navies) is built by Raytheon.

The company has also built an AESA radar for F 16s, should a country buying it make the choice in its favour.

So was the Mini-SAR, or the Miniaturized Synthetic Aperture Radar, on board India's lunar mission Chandrayaan-1 which located ice on the polar surface of moon through high resolution imagery.

Raytheon provided the Mini-SAR to NASA, which gave it to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for its lunar mission as part of their cooperative venture. NASA later sent another mission with a higher resolution SAR camera.

Admiral Doran said that ASTOR flies high enough - 40,000 to 45,000 feet - to cover a large ground area, and to be beyond the range of most surface-to-air missiles (SAMs). It is also equipped with a self protection suite to put out flares and chaff to confuse and deflect any threatening missiles.

ASTOR's main equipment includes a dual-mode SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) and Moving Target Indicator (SAR/MTI), part of the AESA system. The aircraft can fly for nine hours at a stretch.

There are three consoles for monitoring the ground, two for image analysts and one for the Airborne Mission Commander, besides the pilot and co-pilot. Data from the aircraft is fed to the ground stations from where action against hostile targets is initiated if required.

The US has already offered to India F 35 JSF, F 16 Super Viper, F 18 Super Hornet and P8I aircraft and weapon systems.

US usually don't do TOT. But US systems are much better than what India can jointly developed with another country. India didn't request TOT with P8I. 0 TOT. Why request TOT with this one? Why have TOT if India can't do anything with the technology anyway? Just get the darn system and inducted into the Indian military and forget about TOT.

What India has to ask will be considered by Indian govt and its none of anybody else's business?
Since you are from a country which is at mercy of big dad US for all the security and defence needs so your Psych is impaired by it and you belive that don't produce anything just ask dad to supply.
What India can or can not produce should be none of Taiwaneese business atleast? Comment about something you are capable of doing or is this because of ur Troll trait inherited from your chineese bros?

this is an open forum and everyone have the right to contribute. If you do not like my opinion, go to Bharat Rakshak. I would not be able to contribute there. I'm comment on my view from the perspective of what is best for India. India need US help and many Indians are too proud to ask for help.

Ok guys, that was pathetic and uncalled for. I read his posts and I don't think he was trolling. He just asked why India insists on ToT all the time, when sometimes the best goods would be available without ToT. This is something that even Indian members have wondered about. I myself have wondered whether it would be better to get systems like ASTOR or Aegis, even if we don't get ToT.

You could have either answered him or kept quiet. Don't call everyone who asks a doubt about India a troll. In fact, I would say that your negative posts about Taiwan and associating him with some other trolls itself can be called trolling.

@ faithfulguy

India asks for ToT because we are moving towards indegenisation. We need to learn how a system works so we can gain knowledge from it and use it to enhance our defence industry. Our procurements are as much for knowledge as it is for defence.

As for this deal, we can be sure that India will ask for ToT. Whether US provides it is another question. And whether India will agree to the deal without ToT is also speculative. If government feels that the system offers a significant boost to our defences, then they might go for it without ToT. We'll have to wait and see

you are a chinese in disguise of a taiwanese...
guys i dont have problem with the issue that America may not give TOT to India or India may/may not go ahead with purchase with/without TOT.

BUT i take strong exception to the comment made above by faithfulguy that India cannot do anything with the technology anyway.....

India has come too far ahead in terms of science n technology and is ahead of China overall... and India scientists are among the best in the world....

But this faithfulguy is always let me tell you ALWAYS whenever he replies to any post his intention is to try his level best to belittle India's ability and progress....

and he is always is all praise about the chinese despite their lack of innovaton and complete copy paste products... n he never criticises China.... never..

some of his posts on another thread:

So is this helicoptor build from mainly European parts or joint venture projects?
There is nothing wrong if that is the case. We are know that India is very backward in its domestic capability and won't be able to produce a gun without assistance. To get to the top, one has to start in the base.
______________________________________________________________
again he will repeat this thing again n again on all forum threads.... BUT HE DOESNT HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY AGAINST THE CHINESE LACK OF INNOVATION ABILITY....
his job is to just belittle India all the time... he is a chinese in hiding....

India is the Third lagrest economy in Asia and the second fastest growing one.....he should be proud of India, rather then fuffilling his hidden agenda of belittling India on this forum.....
