‘America offers 80 missiles to Japan’

Tokyo, Aug. 24: The United States has offered Japan up to 80 more Patriot interceptor missiles following North Korea’s rocket tests last month, a news report said on Thursday.
Japan’s Defence Agency intends to take up part of the offer as it accelerates the planned deployment of a missile defence system, the Kyodo News agency reported, citing unnamed sources. The agency had planned to build PAC-3 interceptor missiles under license by early 2010 but would now request $99.7 million from the national budget to buy them from the US, the report said. The US offer follows a written request from Defence Agency Director General Fukushiro Nukaga to US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld last month, it added. Japan has been in a hurry to boost its missile defences since North Korea fired a rocket over the Japanese mainland into the Pacific Ocean in 1998, prompting Tokyo and Washington to step up cooperation in missile defences.
The pacifist nation vowed to step up its efforts after North Korea test-fired seven missiles in its direction on July 5, including one long-range Taepodong-2 which is said in theory to be capable of hitting US soil.

This is pathetic, building missiles to shoot down missiles is much more expensive that building offensive missiles. Secondly, the PAC-3 hasnt been proven against the improved medium range ballistic missiles that NK possess. Japan would do better by purchasing 50 F-15's with strike package for interim use before the JSF comes online.

LOL, you wanna shoot down a Nodong with an F-15 ?

Did you know Japan makes its own F-16s and F-15s?

1. Hitting the nodong on the ground, and secondly Patriots have never demonstrated any capability in hitting Nodong type missiles.

2. I didnt realise that. How many F-15's do they have?

lol, Sig...Japan already has the PAC2 and is going to build the PAC3 under license very soon. These 80 missiles are only meant as an immediate stop gap measure. In additon to that i also believe that it has a system similar to THAAD which Israel has renamed the Arrow defense shield . It is the same defense shield bubble that protects Jerusalem against any Nuclear attack. In addition to all this Japan has quite a few AEGIS boats patrolling the waters around the Korean peninsula. In all....Japan has military capabilities today second only to the US and is on par with NATO. Just do a google search and you'll find out.

Oh and Mitsubishi corp has been building an advanced version of the F-15 since the early 90's.They have a "substantial " inventory.

1. Pac-3 hasnt shot down missile resembling the Nodong, it has only been proven against short range missiles.

2. Buying ground attack planes which are demonstrated to have great capability in striking high value targets is better than a stop gap solution which is more gap than anything. There has been lot of critism of THAAD, its been successful only in very controlled trials (the system was always very close to launch and had cordinates of the missile artifically being given to the system)

3. AEIGIS is not offensive weapon.

4. Really? Britian has demonstrated ability to land 5-10,000 troops under fire to any place in the world. Japan has nothing comparable.

5. Well unless there are 200-300 of them, it still makes sense for Japan to procure more.

- The distance between N.Korea and Japan isnt all that much, they can use short range /IRBM missiles on Japan.

-THAAD is effective and Israel has recently tested the Arrow2 which was successful. In a scenario such as this, having a GUN and not needing is better than Not having a GUN and needing it.

-Yes im aware the AEGIS is not an offensive weapons system.

-Try this link http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/japan/weapons.htm

-Japan today has around 260 F-15J and 300 F-16s known as F-2 in Japan.

-Japan also has the 3rd largest constellation of Spy satellites in orbit today.

-Japan also has enough Plutonium to make about 20,000 Nuclear weapons if given the green light by the Japanese security council.
