High-energy electric lasers will be a step closer to fielding with the demonstration of a 150-kW weapon designed to be installed on the U.S. Navy’s DDG-51 Flight 2 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. Ultimately, it will provide protection against unmanned aircraft and swarming small boats. Northrop Grumman will develop the Laser Weapons System Demonstrator (LWSD) under an Office of Naval Research (ONR) contract potentially worth $91 million over the three planned phases.
