US inciting civil war in Venezuela for oil: Bolivia
Bolivian President Evo Morales
The US is pushing Venezuela toward a “civil war” as it has eyes on the country’s oil wealth, Bolivian President Evo Morales has warned.
“I believe [the US] is trying to incite if not a coup d’état then a civil war from their empire,” Morales told a Latin American Youth Summit in the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz on Friday.
“They ... always ... sponsor internal conflicts so that they can interfere and invade us to take control of our oil reserves,” he added.
Morales called on people to stand in solidarity with Venezuela, saying the world needs an “anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist and anti-colonial youth.”
Venezuela has witnessed violent pro-and anti-government protests since February 12.
The opposition has criticized the administration of President Nicolas Maduro for the country's high crime rate and economic hardships, claiming that his policies have led to a shortage of essential goods and a high inflation rate.
Maduro, however, has accused the United States of backing the opposition to launch a coup d’état in the South American country.
The Venezuelan leader ordered the expulsion of three American consular officials earlier in February, accusing them of meeting with student protest leaders under the guise of offering them visas to destabilize the country.
Washington, however, denied the charges, saying the allegations are “baseless and false.”
