TRIPOLI, Libya -- A U.S. warplane was forced to make a crash-landing in Libya after suffering from mechanical failure, The London Daily Telegraph reported Tuesday.

The crew of the F-15E Eagle was believed to be safe. There was no immediate confirmation of the crash-landing from U.S. or U.K. military officials.

A correspondent for the newspaper on the ground in Libya said via Twitter that the plane plowed into a field near opposition stronghold Benghazi in the east of the country late Monday. The crew was in rebel hands, the newspaper reported.

US planes including F-16s were involved in a third night of air attacks on Libya on Monday.

US is dragging UK and France unnecessarily into yet another pursuit of Cheap Oil in the disguise of Democracy..

It suffered a mechanical failure.........it was not shot down.

Thread title needs to be changed.

A jet of the calibre of F-15E being shot down and that too on the fourth day of military operation is difficult to digest since just Yesterday both US and UK declared that they had crippled Libyan air defence.

Anyways, if this is true then it will be all over the net.

A US warplane has crash-landed in Libya, a US military spokesman says.

The spokesman, Kenneth Fiddler, told the BBC there was no indication the F-15E Eagle had been brought down by hostile fire.

Both crew members ejected and have been recovered safely, officials say.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper says the plane went down near the rebel stronghold of Benghazi. It follows a third night of allied air strikes against Col Muammar Gaddafi's forces.

The BBC's Allan Little in Tripoli says the sky above the capital lit up with anti-aircraft fire again.

Our correspondent heard one loud explosion nearby and several distant rumbles much further afield. AFP news agency reported that a blast was heard near Col Gaddafi's Bab al-Aziziya compound.

Libyan state television reported that the capital was "under crusader enemy aerial bombardment" and that several sites had been attacked.

The Libyan authorities said a naval base at Bussetta, about 10km (six miles) east of Tripoli, and a fishing village were also hit by air strikes.

Libyan government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said Monday's air and missile strikes had caused "numerous" civilian casualties, especially at the "civilian airport" in Sirte.

Fighting between Col Gaddafi's forces and the rebels has also continued, despite the declaration of a ceasefire by the government.

A doctor in Misrata - the last rebel-held city in western Libya - told the BBC that residents had suffered another night of shelling by government forces. "Our clinic is full of patients," he said.

There are also reports of continued fighting in Zintan, near the Tunisian border.

In the east, troops loyal to the Libyan leader opened fire with tanks, beating back an advance by opposition fighters outside Ajdabiya.

U.S. Air Force fighter jet has crashed in Libya, the U.S. military said Tuesday.

Both crew members ejected from the aircraft and "are safe," the U.S. military said in a statement Tuesday.

Both crew members aboard the F-15 Strike Eagle jet -- a pilot and a weapons officer -- suffered minor injuries, the military said.

The plane had flown from Europe to Libya as part of a coalition attack on Libyan air defense targets meant to protect civilians in that country. The action was authorized by the United Nations Security Council.

Its has to be a mechanical failure.

F-15 cannot be shot down on the fourth day of operations when Libyan air defence was crippled in the first 3 days.

"Cannot be shot down" ??? LOL

US stealth Fighter "could not be shot down" but it did get shot down in Serbia back then.

There is no such thing as "cannot" just because you think Libya has an inferior air defense.

F-15 for what? it is basically a air superiority fighter not for 'strike'?

May be escorting other bombers..
