US empire negotiates in bad faith and then moves goalpost: Analyst

Iran should be wary of setting agreements with the US empire because it negotiates in bad faith and then moves the goalpost, American writer and analyst Daniel Patrick Welch says.

On Wednesday, reports had surfaced that the US Treasury Department would impose sanctions against individuals in Iran, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates following Iran’s missile testing in October and November.

In response, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani issued an order calling on the country’s Defense Ministry to expedite efforts for boosting the country’s missile program.

On Thursday, the Wall Street Journalreported that the White House has delayed its plan to impose the new sanctions, amid growing tensions with Iran over the July 14, 2015, nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Under the agreement, Iran has been recognized by the United Nations as a nuclear power and will continue its uranium enrichment program, but some restrictions will be placed on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the removal of sanctions.

Commenting to Press TV, Welch said that the possible US sanctions against Iran is “a pushback against Russia for intervening in Syria. I think it’s another rap on the knuckles for getting close to Russia and China.”
“I think it’s just more proof that you can’t trust the US and its Western vassal states in negotiations. They are not sincere in their dialogue and they don’t want what they say they want. They want to punish Iran. It has nothing to do with nuclear weapons or anything else,” he added.

“This is absolutely standard for what Empire does is they negotiate in bad faith, and then move the goalpost,” he stated.

“I think the Iranian government should be very wary of setting agreements [with the West]. What they need to do is to develop more bilateral trade and negotiations in concert with the BRICS and with Russia and

China and the rest of the Global South so that these kinds of sanctions will be toothless as they have been largely with the West against Russia, and then they will be able to free themselves from this kind of bullying and blackmailing,” the analyst noted.
